Cheap Tune Up

I am having my window up/down issue fixed this weekend, and was wondering what would be a good 'cheap' tune up for my '91?

plugs
oil/filer

Anything else?

Warm your car up then clean the throttle body (with BG or an equally high-quality intake system cleaner). If it's dirty a good cleaning will make a difference.

Look in your owner's manual, and you will find a recommended maintenance schedule. Almost all of the items are recommended for service based on mileage as well as time intervals. For example, brake fluid and transmission fluid are recommended to be changed every 30K miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. For items recommended as every 30K miles or 2 years, if you haven't done them in the past 2 years or 30K miles, do them now. Same thing for all the other items in the maintenance schedule, at the intervals specified - fluids, filters, valve adjustment, timing belt (which should already have been changed at least twice on your car, since it's recommended for every 90K miles or 6 years), etc. Believe me, you really don't want to be driving around with four year old brake fluid, a 15 year old timing belt, etc.

The reason for scheduled maintenance is to prevent more serious, more expensive problems from happening. If you think it's too expensive to do the scheduled maintenance, wait till you hear how much it will cost to fix something that fails because you didn't do the maintenance...

It stirs my A@$ everytime a thread like this is started, I suppose as the NSX becomes more affordable to those that cant really afford it, more of these threads will pop up. Cheap and NSX should never be used in the same context. Save a dollar today to spend many more tomorrow.

Let's give pb here the benefit of the doubt. He may not be trying to get out of the major service stuff but is just looking for something that will make her run better (ie - throttle body clean). If he thinks anything like that can be done in lieu of the services mentioned by nsxtasy then he should know better - hopefully it's the former.

Mmmm... yeah. I spend the last month explaining a guy in Holland (on a internet forum) who wanted to buy a NSX, what the cost of owning a car like this is.
Though you can be lucky and have a completely trouble free car, you can also have a lot of cost, just coz things brake down due to your drivingstyle, or because you mod a lot on your car. I am a good example of having a not so trouble free NSX (snapring/coolant bottle > head warping/AC coil etc..)
Also, a small accident is just around the corner and can happen to anyone. Just be prepared for a very high repairbill, compared to a 'normal' car.
If i explain some of the prices for the NSX parts most of the guys are dropping their jaw. (keep in mind NSX parts overhere in Europe are much more expensive then in the US).

The reason i try to explain these peeps is coz i see cars like these maintained very, very poorley because of the cost of maintanance (look at old F-cars and P-cars), and i hate to see another NSX on the market in a few years in very poor condition, going for a few grand.

Wow. Yah, I guess this sites demographics are changing.

I though this site was about fellow NSX owners and exchanging information. Not asking something and getting flamed for it.

MiamieNeSeX: Please get me in contact with your stock broker. I must not be doing well enough financially and maybe he can help. I mean, being your so well-off in your EXPENSIVE Honda.

Since you started this thread,.......... how much cheaper than a set of plugs and an air filter can you get,................ well there is always

I could give you my Stock Brokers (WWW.tdwaterhouse.com) but since there are cheaper ones out there I dought you will sign up. Champagne taste on a beer budget will bite you on the ass always. As far as this site being about exchanging information, I gave you some good advice, just because its not what you want to hear dosent mean I am "Flaming " you. If you want a cheap car to maintain, you are doing your research after the fact, and even thought the NSX is very reliable most repairs arent cheap, but then again cheap is a relative term isn't it?

Call me cheap then.

Oh, and I also shop at Targey. You might pronounce it Target though.

Good night and thanks for the help everyone.

P.S. '91 NSX for sale. Low mileage. Just had $4K 200K mile service completed at Jiffy Lube. :)

I'm with Armando on this one. Though threads like this break my heart.

Let's go over some of these ideas...

Yes, Pumpbubble you ARE in over your head with this car. You will NEVER get ahead if you keep pouring your hard earned money into this very EXPENSIVE HONDA.

Your question implies that is acceptable to perform or buy unnecessary stuff because it is cheap? I hope not. Not only is it a waste of money, it is a waste of your time: it is silly.

You need to do what is necessary because it reasonably needs to be done: Regardless Of Cost. If you needed a expensive clutch job on the *expensive Honda*, or an *expensive* door handle...then you do it. Not because it is cheap or expensive, but because it has to be done.

Save money by being cheap the old fashioned way: do it yourself. No only do you save money, but you know the job is done right and you learn a lot.

It is cheap to do a rain-dance around your NSX too. Try it.

DutchBlackNSX has it right too: failing to do expensive but necessary repairs will just cause everybody a lot of pain. Unloading a jalopy NSX is just a bad idea. Tarnishes the seller for selling shady cars, makes a victim of the buyer and dilutes the value of everybody who owns an NSX. Your reputation is all you have in life that is worth anything at all.

You need to come to grips that your question was in poor form. Here is a example of a better question:

Q. "I'm fixing the window regulator. Is there anything that is reasonable for me to check or fix while the car is getting worked on?"

A. Lube up the window guide rails. Urea grease is about $10.

Drew

/As soon as you stop spending you money on this senseless car...you can start investing in the stock market. But not even the best stock broker can help you if you do not have sufficient funds to invest.
//Your car is an expense, not an investment.
