I have already read the FAQ on installing a CD changer...and am prepared to follow the instructions...

I am a new owner, and want to put a changer in my 97...so, I went to the local Circuit City and they said they don't carry the CHM-620 anymore (the model suggested to install in the FAQ)...apparently it has changed to a CHM-630 now...

Does this model work?...I know about the adapter and getting the M-Bus version switched correctly...but will this 630 model work?...I called Alpine and, as you might guess, they were no help...

Can anyone help me?...thanks...Mike

For a few $$ more get the S634, which also has capability for mp3's - convert your regular audio cd's using your pc (you do have a cd burner right?) & record them onto CDR in mp3 format vs cda. This way you can get ~ 1000 tracks into your magazine of 6 discs. Should be able to fit ~ 60 albums (is that old-school????) rather than 6.
It will also play regular cda's too, so you have flexibility either way.

If I am understanding you correctly, you are saying that by getting this CD changer, you can play MP3's with the factory head unit?

Exactly right - play MP3's through the stock head unit. The MP3 decoder is in the cd changer so will convert to the correct input signal for the head.
If you do a search here on Prime for mp3 or 634 you should find lots of info on this capability.
Note: to get around the 3 character limit in the search engine here on Prime, use a "*" wildcard i.e. enter mp3* or *634 & it will come up with the results.

As always, thanks to everyone so much for helping me...I am heading out to pick up a changer and adapter this afternoon...Mike

my search came out that theres the
ALPINE (IN-CAR) CHA-S634
CD/DVD Changer with 6 Disc DT Mechanism
or the

CD Multiplayers Alpine CHA-S634 ( MP3)
* Ai Net Control * MP3 Playback CD-r / Rw * 6 Disc

and the difference is only 10 pounds?

quick question.
if I buy the ALPINE (IN-CAR) CHA-S634

The info in the CHA-S634 is wrong. It does not play DVDs at all.

This is the Alpine DVD changer as this ebay link described. If you get this type of changer you can play DVDs and everythign in between. My friend has this changer with an Alpine flip u0p monitor and it works well, I use an Alpine indash DVD player myself

Here is the DVD changer.
