These are Racing Brake 1pc rotors. Now before anyone goes off on RB, they have lasted 3 years of heavy track use. This was a rear rotor and showed no signs of spider cracking and were still with in spec so I didn't replace them. However from now on I'm going to keep track of how many heat cycles I put on them and replace them regardless of condition.

I think this was a result of metal fatigue from 30+ weekends of heat cycles. Lesson learned. Plus carry one front and rear spare rotor so the girlfriend doesn't have to drive 3hrs out to the track to bring me my oem rotors sitting in the garage.

After I got off track I went to go get gas and on the way back to the track I felt a major vibration when braking. It would vibrate even when barely touching the brakes. As I pulled in to the parking lot when driving 10 mph I could hear it going thump thump thump. Pulled the wheel and there it was.

Yikes! Yeah, it is always a nice idea to have a set of spare rotors/pads for track use. (I have learned this lesson as well, but not with my NSX) Rotors lasting that long with extended track abuse is really impressive still!


Glad it happened in the paddock and not on track where you could've gotten hurt.
 
Do I understand that those are REAR rotors? (So you can call it an "ass crack", LOL!)

I'm surprised they suddenly went from no visible cracking, to THAT, without any warning.

When rotors crack, it's common for them to make more noise when they're cold than when they're hot on the track. The rotors expand with heat on the track, so it's only when they cool down that they contract and the cracks open up.

3 years for a set of rotors is pretty damn good IMO.
Rear rotors on the NSX last a long, long time. I've gotten 5,000 actual track miles on a set of rear rotors. And I've never had the rears crack; they've eventually gotten close to the minimum thickness spec.
 
I've heard of folks coming off track and driving through a deep puddle (sudden cooling) and that causing a sudden failure. That type of stuff happens though. I have a couple of well-worn, but usable rotors that I keep with my MR2's track kit so I can at least drive the car home if it comes to it.
 
Yes, normally thermal shock will cause that sort of crack. Running hot then rapid cooling.

We had this problem at Vancouver with a champ car. Brand new Rotors cracked like this within one session.
