Hi Folks

I am interested in an NSX in Orange County (Mission Viejo) and before I fly down to pick it up, I wanted to ask an NSXer to check it out for me. As appreciation I'll take you out to lunch the day I fly down to Orange County.

I just wanted to see if there are any door dings, rock chips, scratches, etc on the car. Owner said it was perfect but I need a second opinion.

Thanks!!

Hey there. If it can wait until this weekend (after Crystal Cove) I can probably help you out. I'm in Dana Point and only a few moments from Missino Viejo.

I live in Mission Viejo and would be happy to look at car; however I will be in Peoria until Friday afternoon. I would recommend contacting Ramon at Niguel Motors. Great shop that specializes in Acuras and top flight NSX mechanic. Plus, he has owned 3 NSX's and recently bought my '99. When you call him tell him Steve referred you and he would be happy to give car a professional look over, meaning beyond dents dings etc. Call him at 949-348-2476.

At a minimum, call Ramon. If the car is in MV., there is a 99.9% chance he knows the car. I found the NSX to be a difficult car to buy.
(If you are looking for a better than average example)
You cant be too careful!

I have a Dealership about just north of them in Downey, I'll do a free quick check for the basics on it for you with my master tech if you can have the guy bring it to me. let me know.

Thanks for all your help guys. I may take Matt up on his offer to check out the car. I'll ask the owner if he doesn't mind taking it to his dealership. ....If I can return the favor anytime in the future, let me know I'm in San Francisco.

I would recommend that you insist that he takes the car into the dealer/mechanic of your choice before you close the deal. That should be easy since it seems that there are a couple of qualified places to take it to near the seller. Much better than a casual look over.

Matt is giving you a very generous offer that I think you are wise to consider.

And I don't want to seem like I'm bashing Matt because I'm not. He's an oustanding guy that I recall from my old S2K guys that has a very long track record of taking care of folks. I've recommended his Honda dealership to several people for service and new car purchases.

But, an NSX is a peculiar beast. I would make sure that a certified technician that spends a lot of time around NSX's has more than a casual looksie at any NSX before I purchase it. Hidden accidents, sloppy work, or just plain deferred maintenance can end up costing you thousands down the road and is well worth the $100 - $150 for a full pre-purchase inspection.

It sounds like Matt has a master tech. who can do this for you. If he/she has looked at a lot of NSX's than go that route. If not, there are several very good alternatives that are near Mission Viejo that can do the work for you.

$34.5M isn't unreasonable, IMO, if the car is clean and all maintenance (including timing belt, water pump, hoses, etc.) has been done. Remember, maintenance is by time and milage and you're now talking about a 15-year old car.

Good luck.

BTW - I want to reiterate that I think Matt is being very generous and that I feel that he is a stand up guy that takes care of his customers. But I'd make sure his master tech. has legitimate NSX experience. Remember, some dealerships (like Acura Mission Viejo) maybe look at 5 different NSX's in a year. Other shops and dealerships have as many as a dozen on hand at any time. You need familiarity with these cars. Esp. as they get older. I'd imagine Matt wouldn't recommend a service that wasn't useful but ask the question.

Thanks for the rf HAPA. Yes, Our master tech, Ed Paris is well versed with the nsx, both tuned and untuned. He has quite a few regulars here, and his inspection will cover every one of you concerns. A great alternative is to have the Laguna Niguel shop handle an paid inspection, it is closer to the car it sounds, but the inspections will be about the same quality imo.
Who has that number?
Matt

I just called Ramon and he does know the car! He said it was clean and a great deal....now I have to work on the price.

Keep you guys posted!!!!

DDankew,
Be sure and ask the million dollar question.
ANY paint work? Touch up? Front end/bumper/hood?
Sounds like a great car!

Looks like a clean car from the pic's.

I'm flying down on the 21st to pick up the car....now I need to decide whether to have Ramon do the 30K service before I go back up to San Francisco. The NSX master mechanic up here will charge around $ 1800 for the timing belt, water pump and valve adjustment. Ramon only $ 1500, but what if I need a minor tweak in the future, can't drive back down to Orange county to let him work on it?

I also read on the Tech Bulletin that the 91's had a water pump / Hose recall and that the Acura dealer would fix this (or goodwill?). Any insight into this recall..have you done it? Perhaps Matt can add his view from a dealership perspective.

I think you'd have to hit one heck of a stroke of good luck to have an Acura dealer still fix this issue after 15-years. But... there are some very good dealers out there and you never know. It's certainly worth a call to Matt Piercy or Jon Martin at South Coast Acura.

I pm'd you on your other question.

IMO, I would just do it up near you in SF so you can get to know the techs close to you. Ask them if they will cut you a deal as you plan on doing all you service with them  As for the pump hose. pm me the VIN and I'll look into this for you.

I just came back from Orange County with my newest addtion..a 1991 NSX(my 3rd NSX). I met Ramon at Niguel Motors and drove around Mission Viejo and then back up the 5 to San Francisco. This has to be one the the cleanest NSX's around with all documentation and tasteful upgrades.

I'll post pics once I wash the car...only 26,700 miles on this baby. From what I recall (had a '94 before) the '91 doesn't have any power steering, so it's going take a while to get accustomed this this car.

I want to thank all those who were willing to help out a guy trying to get back in the NSX community.

Cheers!

1) Congrat's. Many happy, safe miles to you.
2) I could be wrong but I'm 99% sure that unless the car came with the automatic tranny, all NSX's sold in the US between 1991 and 1994 lacked the electric power steering.
