Can I put a battery tender on a dead battery?

Two weeks ago the NSX wouldn't start and the battery is five years old or more. No big deal as the car is sitting for the winter outdoors. I want to put a Schumacher 112S 1.5 Amp charger on the car so that the security system works through the winter. I don't care what happens to the battery short of bursting. Now two weeks later even the red blinking light has quit.
Schumacher advises against charging the battery with this charger but I see no reason for this policy.

Why not just replace the battery now (and put a charger on it)? That way, you'll know that the security system will work all winter.

I had the same problem with my battery this past summer. Check the acid/water level because mine was dry so I added distilled water to it and used my battery tender to trickle charge it. works fine now....

The battery is at the end of its useful life.
Adding water to the cells if they are dry really won't buy you the satisfaction of uninterrupted security that you desire.
The only course is to buy a new battery.
Costco has them for $38.

Thanks everybody. I hooked up the charger to the dead battery and all is well now. THe battery is a sealed for life Sears branded Gold Diehard made by AC/Delco. I would have replaced it now instead of in the spring but I can't find this battery at Sears or the identical battery at Acura. Both companies have switch to a generic box with no eye. They told me it is a rebranded Interstate but I need to check them out more first.
AC/Delco made the best batteries I ever bought.
One reason for the switch is the new batteries at the dealer and Sears are now 20 percent cheaper. Damn you WalMart!

Tony,

I have an Interstate distributor near me, and I needed a battery. They had no problem fitting my 1991 NSX. They sell to the public, so you can go directly to them. I do not know about Canada though. If you do it will not be the Costco price though, I think it was about $90US.

I have had very good experience with Interstate. I have used their battery product for over 20 years without a glitch, or vehicle that let me down.

HTH,
LarryB
