hey everyone--

i'm looking for a camera mount for my first track day. ive decided not to get a harness bar yet. what to people think of this http://www.ioportracing.com/video.htm
will instructors allow that on the side glass or back window? i like the idea of the suction cup for other filming projects

I think that depends on where you are tracking and who with.

I can tell you from experience that the Hama universal mounts suction cup for lack of a better work sucks and not in the good way. I cannot tell you how many times this thing has fallen off while filming on drives. I have modified mine and now happy with it thou. If you do decide to use a suction cup mount at least use a vacuum type with a plunger.

Please check this most for photos and more info

I borrowed one of those mounts to use in my NSX at Thunderhill and at the beginning, I couldn't get it to stay on my back glass. The owner of that mount decided to clean the suction area with window cleaner as well as the window and then breathed a little hot air to get the window damp and sucked it on there and it stayed fine for the rest of the day. It is better than nothing but I am not sure if some tracks will let you use one of those.

I tried the Hama suction cup mount and, as mentioned above, it didn't work well with my JVC camcorder simply because it did not keep stuck.

Then I bought a Pullman suction mount which works perfectly for me. The only problem was that because the rear window is fixed at an angle, I could not turn the ball mount up far enough to get the camera horizontal (only 90 degree angle).
I took it off and used a lathe and file to make the groove deeper. That still did not do it because the back of the camcorder would hit the window when I tried to level it.
Then, I pulled of the ball mount from the Hama mount and fixed it on top of the Pullman ball (the threads matched) and now it works perfectly.

Haven't tried to mount the camcorder on the doorwindows or outside the car yet, but the Pullman mount seems to be strong enough for that.

Hey Will,
I wouldn't trust anything with only one suction cup. I highly recommend the SM31 from ChaseCam (not the SM30). I've been using mine for over two years now and its solid. Works great on the back glass.

Come to think of it, I'm not going to be using mine much this year. If you're in Manhattan you should swing by and borrow mine for an event to try it out. You can email me at [email protected].

I have seen alot of mounts from sticky pods to headrest mounts and the next best thing is a vacuum suction cup. If your track allows you to use a mount that is not mechanically fixed then I highly recomment this one for the Nsx for back or side glass mounting.

Once its pumped up to full vacuum you will not be able to pull it off. I have even used it to pull out dents on peoples cars .... yes its that strong. I have had this mount on the outside of my car as well as a Gallardo at over a 100 MPH.

You must have both side windows down while you are on the track. May I suggest that you go to your first HPDE event focused on learning the proper techniques and not distract yourself with a video camera.

ah i remember reading that. thanks for the heads up. the purpose of the video camera is to help me learn. i know the day is going to go by very quickly and its going to be hard to absorb everything that is thrown at me. id like to be able to look back and refresh my memory about what happened.

Listen to our senior member.Fidiling with a camera will distract you and annoy your instructer, trust me.There is nothing pretty about your first time at the track, you will learn little from taping your first outing. If you want something for learning purposes find an insructional video or instructer in car vid, there are some floating around for most NE tracks.
