Is it worth my FREE WEEKEND MINUTES to call 411 to tell the CHP (California Highway Patrol ) there's a car driving VERY slow in traffic (asian, by the way)
and they should write a ticket for being

1) in the fast lane
2) driving MUCH slower than the flow of traffic
3) not yielding to faster traffic in Lane 1

I know I'd get a ticket if I drove the opposite of the conditions described above:

1) closing in on traffic in the fast lane?
2) changing lanes to maneuver around such driver?
3) taking up 2 lanes so said d****head will know what it's like to have a driver in front of them driving EXACTLY like them?

Alternative: Just don't pay any mind.......... let it Ken Lay me to a slow death. (No, not LAY as in F***ing, but the actual guy who went 10 toes up this past week)

Well calling 411 will only get you information. I think it would be much better to get along side the person and point your gun at them and then show them a sign that says SPEED UP OR DIE. I bet that would get a reaction. Of course I would never do that sort of thing.

  Didn't expect that from a mild mannered Manny.

We got all kinds of drivers in LA/OC. On a daily basis, I ran into both kinds. I have pickup trucks that tail gate me so close that they block the entire rearview, before I pull off to let them by. I guess you can eliminate them by being the fastest car on the road which I'm not willing to take that risk.

One the other hand, I have people on the phone with 1/4 mile of open space in front of them and a mile of cars behind them and they don't care.

I guess I've learned to live with them.

They get no tickets I bet. Those people deserve the ticket.... not when I go 110 MPH....

I think you can just dial 911 and the dispatcher can transfer you to CHP. Usually they don't give a rats ass unless the person you are reporting are from the following:

1.) The vehicle on the Amber Alert
2.) Possible DUI
3.) Guns
4.) Road Rage
5.) Speeding

I too dislike slow drivers on the fast lane and this causes traffic gridlock. This is a waste of time (your life) and energy (gas) to hundreds or even thousands of people daily. I think the best way to get their attention is to get in front of them and brake. This will cause them to slow down from their normal pace and piss them off. However I don't wish for any of you to do this for safety reasons. Because if they are a gang member you could get shot, if the person has mental problems he will turn road rage on you or you could get shot as well. I have yet to do this, but it's fun just to think about it.

Of course.... so is gender...... so is age....... so is socio-economic status (not genetically aquired).....all bad drivers in the differing categories aren't the same by percentage...... some are worse than others. Whew, asian women..... don't get me started. I just hate inconsistent enforcement of the law. Driving slow is every bit as dangerous as NOT PAYING ATTENTION and driving fast. Though how many of you fast NSX drivers 90+ mph are "distracted"??? Hmmmmmm??? Not me.

Here in Orange County, the main problem is the Mexicans with those 1947 Ford trucks doing 55mph in the fast lane or those in the 1985 Dodge Minivan, or the in the 1988 Hyundai. For Rowland Heights it's likely the Asian mothers.

I rarely get in a situation where there is no way to pass and I am stuck behind someone for a length of time, I tend to get close enough so they notice me (but not close enough to the point of extreme tailgating), and they will either move over, or I will flash high beams after about a half-mile - I would say this solves 90% of slow traffic problems, even if they do give me a bizzare glance after the fact.

Another solution is to simply view all other traffic as an obsticle, and plan a route around it as opposed to simply pointing towards the fast lane.

I think the problem we are discussing is the fact that they won't move out of the way. No problems going around them, but during traffic times it is more of a hazard and much more difficult to pass, as other drivers are trying to pass them also.

Most of the traffic is created by these drivers or semi trucks going uphill (which I totally respect and understand, the later).

John: If you tried high beaming the people I've seen they will simply go slower or give you the finger, if you are lucky you will get both.

Powered's got the POWER!!!!!! semi's and 18 wheeler's I can understand. That's where the mini vans and those who lack the driving necessities (ala Al Campanis) should put themselves in those lanes and leave the drivers who want to drive to be in the fast lanes... hence the law SLOWER TRAFFIC PLEASE, (should say FUCKING) KEEP RIGHT.

Yeah, I hate this problem. Its not so much me getting stuck behind a slower car, but rather the fact that they are being clueless or/and rude. The farthest left lane is for passing. I can't stand it! I hate having to pass around them, because I really shouldn't have to.

Dammit, if I ever join the CHP, I'll make it my goal to pull over left lane hogs and those that don't signal when chaning lanes/making turns. Both biggest pet peeves of mine.

CHP doesn't use a dedicated cell number such as *CHP so you can reach them to report issues on the highways? I know you guys out west are still into lava lamps and tie dye but it's about time to modernize your communications don't you think? :)

Florida has *FHP, Georgia has *GSP, Alabama *HP etc.... A lot of States use #77 as a means to contact the highway patrol. It's very useful if you are being pulled over by an unmarked car. Most States have regulations preventing highway patrols from using unmarked cars to pull over motorists and even encourage you to call them on your cell to establish the identity of a car if you are in doubt. Accordingly these States' highway patrols have specific guidelines instructing officers in unmarked cars to use extra patience if they absolutely, positively have to pull over a motorist when in an unmarked patrol car. You then have the right to ask for a marked vehicle to appear on scene before unlocking your doors or rolling down your windows.

The use of "#77" has not been heard of, used or identified by AT&T, Verizon,
the University of California Police Department, Riverside, or the UCR
Telecommunications System/department as a "link" to any police dispatcher.
In order to clearify any misperception or information that was provided, in
any emergency whether on or off campus and a cell phone is the only
telephone accessible, please dial "911". By use of the cell phone when
dialing 911, you will be connected with the California Highway Patrol
Dispatch. CHP Dispatchers have been trained to screen the call for the
location and determine if your call needs to be connected to a specific
police department.

This is what I found in a bulletin from UCR. We need a #77.
