two questions, first where can i buy it? the faq lists griots but its not listed on their website, i emailed for a quote... same with drypak, but it would be nice if i could just click, click, click, see price, buy.

second, it says if humidity in a stored vehicle gets high, to put the desiccant in an oven to dry it out..... how high is high?

here's the faq section about it:

Dessicants
[GM] Ensure the climate control is in the"recirculate" position, and think about putting some moisture absorbing silica gel in the interior and trunk. Use about 5lbs. for interior, 3lbs. for the trunk. Do NOT put this stuff directly on the leather or dash, you will get marks. Put it on a towel.

Open the glovebox, CD player etc. to expose the electronics to the drying agent. Remove radar detector, scanner etc. Bulk desiccant is sold by Griot's, Drypack & others. Buy a hygrometer and leave it inside the car where you can check it without opening the vehicle. Renew the gel by placing in a low oven when needed.

dry pak is out, too expensive, be cheaper to throw a dehumidifier in the car and pay for the electricity :P.

email from them:

Our minimum order quantity is 30 lbs. and the price per lb. is $5.00.

Please let me know if you need any more information on our silica gel products.

The cheapest solution is probably to buy the big packs used for cargo and shipping containers. Get a couple 1-3 lb bags and just leave them on the floor of the car.

Go to Yahoo and type in "desiccant" and you'll find a dozen vendors. I've bought online before but remember I had to search for a while - most only do phone orders. Also there are many manufacturers who do not sell retail, so pay attention to the website before you call. You can also buy on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1849503316

You can also go to most marine supply stores and buy a 1 - 5 gallon pails of the stuff. It's commonly used for boat storage.

You can also get fancy and buy "self indicating" ones that turn from blue to pink as they become saturated. These are good for camera bags and gun cases.

Once saturated, a 225F degree oven for several hours makes them like new again.

P.S. Ethylene absorber packs are often made by the same companies and are very cool. Put one in the veggie drawer in the fridge and most produce lasts considerably longer.

robr,

I don't wish to appear ignorant here, but, what are you using this product for?

Is it for storage? I store my car in the winter and would be interested in hearing what preparations you are making.

is that stuff really that expensive? the ones on ebay works out to $23 for 2 lbs with shipping. $100 for 8 lbs just seems pretty ridiculous for a bunch of absorbant silica. ill check marine supply places as well. ugh.

I did read the FAQ, but it did not tell WHY you would need this (does it keep critters out, make the stereo sound better, improve horsepower?

Also, what is considered "long term" storage? I store my car for 3-4 months during the winter, but I don't consider that "long term".

All you have to do is go to Walmart and buy DampRids. These are the same things and work better then the dry packs. I have been using them for years and keep 6 containers in my car when it sits for any amount of time. This keeps any moisture out of my interior and I also use them in the winter with a car jacket.

michigan, these things absorb water (ie reduce the humidity so things like mold dont grow and stink up your car). they're the little silica gel packs you sometimes get in the box when you buy something electronic.

At the start of last winter, I did a search on Yahoo!, just like Lud advises, and ended up buying desiccant bags from Desiccare to use in my NSX.

Their Cargo Dry-Pak is perfect for the NSX. I put five of the 500g bags in the interior and one in the trunk. I also bought a set of their Humidity Indicating Cards and put one on the dashboard so that I could check the humidity without opening up the car.

I bought 9 of the 500g bags and a set of 10 HI cards and paid $55 including shipping. If you only get six bags, you'll probably pay less than that.

To order, call Cathy McIntyre at their Richland MS facility at 888-932-0405 or 601-932-0405.

hey fellas, once i get back to Miramar,CA i'm sure i can hook you guys up with dessicant for free. we use it on our planes' radar systems. i'm sure i can borrow some since we're always using them. we get them in gallon size cans. so you nsx owners in LA and SD area, get with me in Jan. the dessicant we use on our planes is blue and turns pink/white as it absorbs humidity. a quick way to reuse dessicant is to pop it in the microwave for a few minutes and they turn right back to blue. we do this only when we run out of dessicant once in a while. doesn't last as long as new dessicant, but then again our planes are exposed to more exteme conditions. cabin pressurization, etc.

fyi, Walmart no longer carries damprids (www.damprid.com). i called damprid and was told Lowes hardware store now carries it in 6 lb refill packages in their household cleaner area. I'm trying to reach lowes now to verify.

after u get the moisture absorber have u thought about maybe shrink wrapping like they do with boats to seal out any additional humidity from getttin in ? and is there any prep work involved with the engine when storing a car for long periods of time...... by the way robr i think we met at the poker rally.

yes we did meet, you had the car with the lecher side skirts i think? i dont want to completely seal the thing, my friend needs to be able to get in and out to start it up and let it run every few weeks. its going in his garage, i just sort of read the faq about car storage and am just doing the basics. oil change, wash, store it covered in a garage, desiccant, trickle charger and start it up occasionally. its only going to be there for about a year, so it should be fine. if i was going to store it longer, then i might consider taking some of the more pain in the but steps listed in the faq

ok lowe's does indeed have it. 9 lbs for $22 (three 48oz. boxes at $7.xx per box) which is a hell of a lot better than the $100+ i've been finding on the net.
