Same thing happened to me except I replaced it with new. I tried to close the trunk on a cardboard box and the box won. I have Oem struts so I think the metal might be fatiguing after many years of shear force being applied.

That's exactly what I have been doing for the last 20 years. However, the security guys for underground parking of shopping malls.. that's a different story. Here in Istanbul they check your trunk and slam it down. :frown:
