Broken Stud

I had the wheels off this weekend to paint the calipers. One of the lug nuts came off with little effort with the stud broken of inside it. I had my local shop install the wheels in July. I am a bit suspicious as all of the other studs were in good condition. I suspect over torqued lug nut by the shop. I sthis the most likely cause. I ask because if so I might want to look elsewhere to get a new one put in.

Any thoughts.

Much appreciated,

Steve

Many shops just torque the hell out of the lugs. It helps to specify 80ft/lb whenever anyone takes the wheels off. If they don't break out the torque wrench, go elsewhere. Most people are happy to oblige, especially for a car an unique as the NSX.

a lot of times its not over torqing because the air guns they use are set to abot 80-90 ft lbs, but rather the fact that they dont hand thread them well enough first-

some guys put the lug on barely then hit it with a gun- this can lead to cross threading and THAT is why they break. (most of the time)
either way , tell the shop waht happened and they may pay to have it replaced any where you like-- my shop did anyway.

Front or rear stud?

Front = easy
Rear = pita

For your sake, i hope it was the front! Either way, I would replace all at that wheel while you are at it.
