broken door handle

Last night I pulled on the interior drivers door handle and heard a loud pop. The handle is now broken (not the handle itself, but whatever connects it to the lock mechanism. The handle still functions from the outside. Any advice before I take it to my local acura dealer? Is there a do it yourself quick fix?
thanks

It's a $50 dollar part. The aftermarket part is much less expensive and higher quality; milled forged part instead of poured. Not knocking Honda, the part lasts 15 years.

Once you have the handle apart, make sure the broken part is the removable component that is available as replacement from SOS or Dali - this replaceable lever is attached to the bottom part of the handle and most often is the part that breaks. However, I know at least one person who experienced the fixed lever (top one) of the actual handle break, as opposed to the bottom replaceable lever. There is no replacement component for that top piece, as it requires the complete handle pull; this is not available from Acura (where you have to buy complete door handle assembly), and there is no comparable after-market replacement but an aluminum dress-up part is available from SOS as a pair.
This particular individual referenced above obtained the handle pull from me as as replacement for his broken one - I had upgraded to the billet Aluminum ones from SOS so had them available.

In the pictures below, it shows the handle with the fixed (top) lever attached - the bottom replaceable lever is removed. I still have the OEM Passenger's door handle pull available (the one in pics below) if anyone is looking for this. The alternative is you buy the billet handles from SOS

Hi! The handle breaks because as the door gets more use, the cable that connects the door handle to the latch stretches. Eventually the door handle will run out of travel before the door releases, so the owner gives it an extra tug, and, hey-presto, a broken handle! No guesses how I found this out on my '92 auto!

Honda did, however, include a degree of adjustment in the handle-end mounting of the cable that does take up the stretch. You just have to move the cable end 'along a slot' in the mounting bracket... if not,or you run out of adjustment, just bend the mounting bracket a bit! hope that helps, often it's easier to sort a problem if you know WHY it happened..
