A new owner with a 4 year old NSX with 400 miles on it wants to know if he should change the oil or not. I recommended not to change it until 7k miles. Is that the right thing to do?

Are you saying a 4 year old car has only 400 miles??? Wow!

Has the car been sitting idle for that long or have they started the engine up occasionally?

I would probably go ahead and change the oil if it were me based on the time alone.

So would I. I realize that they recommend you leave it in, but four years is an awfully long time.

I would also recommend changing the other fluids, especially the brake fluid, if that has not already been done. (Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and loses its effectiveness as a result.)

Maybe NSXtasy can confirm this, but doesn't that break in oil have certain properties that are different from regular oil?

If that is the case, and you have not reached the break-in period as described in your owner's manual; I would change the oil, but with the same break-in oil, if that type of oil can be purchased. Then once the break-in period is reached start using regular oil (or the synthetic of choice).

Yes, it does. (I believe its composition is higher in molybdenum, among other differences.)

It's a good thought, but I don't think that type of oil can be purchased anywhere.

replace oil based on mileage AND time

You should replace your oil regardless of your mileage if it has been more than one year. Check into your owner's manual/service manual and it will tell you that you should change your oil based on time if you are not putting down that many miles.

Oil like everything else doesn't last forever even if you don't drive your car so regular replacement is a good idea.

I don't understand replacing an oil that is needed to break in the motor properly. THis is not regular oil, it is the special oil from the factory. Oil does not go bad with time.
I suggest you phone Honda America and speak to Woodward.
