break-in mileage for new street tires ??

I'm mounting a new set of street tires to replace a pair of worn REARs. Also have some track events lined up over Memorial Day.

What is the minimum recommended 'break-in' street mileage with new tires prior to using them at a track event??

I once did a series of events with "fresh" tires (~200 road miles) and found that I had drastically increased initial wear after a hard 3-day weekend at Putnam Park.

Thanks in advance.

FAQ suggestions...

Did a "manual" NSX FAQ check (search functionality currently disabled) and found:

Typically it is recommended that you put 300-400 miles on the tires before taking them to the track (assuming you're not using shaved tires). Also, a new tire with full depth tread blocks WILL feel more squirmy than worn or shaved tires.

Per the Tire Rack website (emphasis added in bold):

"Tires are comprised of many layers of rubber, steel and fabric. Due to these different components, your new tires require a "break-in" period to ensure that they deliver their normal ride quality and maximum performance. As tires are cured, a "release lubricant" is applied to prevent them from sticking in their mold. Some of the lubricant stays on the surface of your tires, reducing traction until it is worn away. Five hundred miles of easy acceleration, cornering and braking will allow the mold release lubricant to wear off, allowing the other tire components to begin working together. It is also important to note that your old tires probably had very little tread depth remaining when you felt it was time to replace them. As any autocrosser or racer who has tread rubber shaved off of his tires will tell you "low tread depth tires respond quicker." Don’t be surprised if your new tires are a little slower to respond (even if you use the exact same tire as before). Their new, full depth brings with it a little more tread squirm until they wear down."

However, I've used tires on the track with under 500 miles. If you just got them, heck - drive them to the track, and however many miles it is, it is. ;)

Hey Manuel, aren't you about ready for R compound rubber, anyway?

I put over 200 miles on them from Sunday, including some twisties on US-2 near Rock River... the drive to GMAN should push me over 350 miles.

Am probably ready for R-compound rubber, but I sold my spare 17/17 wheels, and my big-brake kit requires me to put a few more pennies away :(
