Brake Rotors May Be Warped

I just bought my '96 about a month ago with the Acura extended warranty. Well I noticed that when I brake at high speeds the car vibrates. This is probably a good indication that the rotors are warped. Do you guys think that this will be covered under warranty?

Here are some thoughts ........ you most likely bought the car as is with some assurances that it had gone through inspection ....... right?

If it is within 30 days, and you have not put too much mileage already, often dealers will take care of it if you are nice

Did the car have a complete tech inspection before the purchase? If so did they check the brakes as being ok ....... again if this is within 500 miles of your purchase mileage there is a chance .......

Finally, you may negotiate splitting the cost of the rotors and that may be the compromise they are willing to consider or you pay for labor only, shows willingness to work with them .........

An alternative would be your opportunity to upgrade the rotors with aftermarket ones and get better braking for the same price ..... and don't forget to change your brake fluid as well while you are at it .......

Good luck.

If you do end up paying for replacement, the pre-97 stock rotors are fairly inexpensive.
A few hundred bucks will buy you the whole set. You can also take the opportunity to pick up some Powerslots at around the same price.

Who makes aftermarket rotors for NSX's. I know RM offers slotted rotors. Which brand would you guys go with?

You can get Powerslot rotors, a conventional slotted rotor. If you plan on doing a lot of track events, it might make sense to update to Stoptech Aerorotors (with stock calipers) or one of the big brake kits (with aftermarket calipers).

You can get Powerslot or Stoptech rotors from Dali Racing.

There's lots of info in the "Brakes" section of the FAQ under the "Performance" heading.

I got a call from the shop and they said that the rotors are in fact warped. They said that for $200 they can machine them. Is this true? I thought that if the rotors were warped, you cannot use them again.

They can be machined, but it is really not worth it. For that kind of money, get a set of fronts (the rears are probably fine) from Dali racing and check the FAQ and Dano's DIY page for replacing them, or have the dealer replace them. Machined rotors are much more likely to warp again.

How long ago did you purchased the NSX as mentioned above, the "State of CA" requires a "smog and safety inspection" inspection and brakes are safety items.

This is not covered by the extended warranty you purchased.

I would not resurface rotors as you can have it replaced for a little more $

hope this helps,

Personally I would just buy the Acura OEM rotors from Niello Acura for $97 each and call it a day. I just bought and installed mine last week and they feel just as good as any other rotor out there. It also helps that I am now using the Carbotech Panther Plus pads as my everyday brake pad.

I have bought every rotor available over the past 2 years, and not one set has lasted me more than 3 months.(That's including at least one track event every three months.) I've either warped or actually cracked in half slotted & cross drilled rotors.

BTW, the rotor install is an easy DIY.

Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna go ahead and buy a new set of rotors. Since it's gonna cost the same amount of money anyway.

Wait, wait!! I had the same problem on my 40k mile car. I pulled the rotors, took them to the auto part store, and $10 and about 1 hr later the are totally fixed. Don't spend the money..pull them and take them to be turned!!
