Brake light dash light illuminating

The brakelight (3rd) is starting to illuminate randomly lately.
I have checked all the fuses and all appear fine.
I have had friend verify the all brake lights are working properly.
The light doesn't come on everytime I drive the car either. Probably every 3 or 4 times that I drive it it is on upon start up. It never just comes on while driving the car.
Any ideas?
BTW, manual trans, 71k and no work has been done to the tailights ever.

Did you check the level of fluid in the reservoir under the hood, to make sure it's between the MIN line and the MAX line?

Brake light failure sensor?

I have spent time just today with my service manual trouble shooting this same problem. I think one of the "brake light failure sensors" may be the cause. I did the test in the service manual and also checked all the connections. I think the rt side is bad. Maybe Ken Or Larry B can chime in here. joe

I've got a service manual also and didn't even think to look in it:frown:
I'll check it out and see if it cures my problem.

I have resolved the problem with my car. I cleaned the Electrical contacts inside the ign.switch. The tailght indicator circuit is very sensitive to dirty conections. If the ign switch is neglected long enough,you may have a no start condition. The removal and test of the switch is in your manual..I cleaned mine up and now I am back on the road with no indicator light problem.. I will order a new switch soon. good luck. joe

I drove mine twice yesterday. One time the light came on and one time it didn't.
Still puzzled.
I guess I'll check into the ignition idea.
