If your pedal is initially poor (soft) but firms up with repeated strokes it is probably NOT the master cylinder. Master cylinders typically exhibit the opposite behaviour - good initial feel but a slow sinking of the pedal with continued pressure. It really sounds like you have air in the system - are you sure all your connections between the SS lines and the hard lines are secure? These can be tough to seal.
