Ultimately, the shields are held on by the brake calipers, but IIRC I cut mine off with a Dremel.
why would you do this?
i was looking around on line and most people just cut them off.
i want to do this because they look ugly as hell. plus it help with weight reduction.

cutting is a bit drastic, just unbolt them if you feel the need.
how long would this take?
Just remove the wheel spindel and they come right off and if you ever want to re-install them they are intact.
After they're off you can build a pair of cooling ducts ala Porsche, a few Adel clamps, some two in. scat tubing and a few rivets for under $50 bucks.
If you take your time they'll look cool too.
