Blown coolant hose, brown sludge/buildup

I recently blew a coolant hose and was just a mere 1/8mi from my house so was able to limp it home. The needle barely peaked to the top right as I got into the garage.

I just pulled off the blown coolant hose, here:

And found this brown buildup on the end of the hose fitting on the engine side:

I wiped the inside of the coolant hose with a shop rag and this brown stuff was coating the inside:

Just wondering if this is something I should be concerned about (like possible oil from maybe a blown headgasket). This brown stuff is no where else, and the rest of the coolant is bright green. This buildup is right where the hose burst, so I'm thinking it's just burnt up coolant.

Thoughts?

Maybe the correct antifreeze wasn't used before and that's corrosion? I'm sure someone with experience will reply soon.

Same exact hose burst on me the same way right next to my sisters house and was able to make it to her garage. I dont remember seeing any gunk though. Wonder why it's this hose, possibly weakened by constant flexing?

I see this "gunk" on the majority of NSX's:)

Flush, New coolant, new hose(s), good to go.

Replace the hoses - at least the big ones, if not all of them - every once in a while, so this doesn't happen unexpectedly, usually at an inconvenient place and time. Doing it when you replace the timing belt is a good idea, because the interval is sufficiently long, and the coolant is flushed when doing the water pump at the same time.

The antifreeze actually looks pretty good, but maybe it was from long ago.

Glad to hear this. Thanks Larry. Suggestions on what to clean that gunk off with?

I agree. She's just about to get the TB/WP replaced next week, but I'm saving a couple bucks replacing this hose myself (and primarily saving on towing fees).

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

What was the very first thing that you noticed that indicated that you had a blown hose? Steam? Coolant smell? Temp. gauge rising? Other?

Thanks.

I was on the freeway doing about 80mph. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw steam/coolant billowing out the back of the car, then I looked at the gauge and the temperature needle was climbing.

You stated that the coolant was "green". You should only use Honda coolant in this engine and it is light blue in color. The green color leads me to believe the previous owner used Prestone or some other type coolant. The Honda coolant reduces corrosion of internal metals. Again, only use Honda coolant.

IIRC Honda Type II used to be green before a reformulation in the mid-00's. Not that six or seven-year-old green Honda coolant is what you want either  I usually don't let it go more than 2-3 years.

The new Type II is more blue than green, but I've still mistaken it for green stuff just looking down the radiator cap (on another Honda) or into the overflow (on an NSX), only to find it's actually more bluish once I get some of it out into the open.

yeah some dealers still have tons of the green stuff

and the blue just shows its the newer version they added blue dye

LOL that makes it the new version LOL same shit

dont forget to bleed the system after you re-fill it

Actually, my coolant is mostly purple now. I refilled with a 25/75 mixture of coolant and distilled water, then added Royal Purple's Purple Ice. I would have gone with Water Wetter but the store was out, and this coolant is fairly temporary because the car is headed in for it's 90k service.

At least it was until a truck hit me at 50mph two days ago, but that's another thread... :(

wheres that thread? looked at you profile didnt see anythig about a car hitting you at 50mph what happend and any pics?
