I have and plan to keep Verizon as my cell carrier. I need to pick up a smartphone as my next phone for business reasons and will be choosing between the aforementioned platforms. Price is not really a concern as I primarily care about ease of use, conveinence, and ability to work with my laptop/exchange.

I am not a gadget guy, so I don't keep up or know much about this stuff. What are the pros and cons of the Blackberry's vs. the new Treo 700 platform?

I support both here at our company. NOT a fan of the blackberry :) From a corporate use standpoint, they require a seperate server running the BES software ($$$) to make the mail / internet functionality work. I was never much impressed with the functionality, the interface or the apps that were available for it.

There are a few Treo 700w here. If you're familiar with windows, you'll have no trouble using one. The EVDO high speed internet is very nice! Think of it as a small laptop. Pretty much anything you can do with your laptop, you can do with the 700w (or any of the Windows Mobile based PDA/Phones). They also work with Exchange 2003's synch features natively, or you can use Verizon's wireless sync (free) if you want true real time / pushed email functionality.

Try them out side by side and you'll see why I have a stack of blackberries on my desk that people have ditched for Windows Mobile based devices (I730, VX6600, Treo 700W, etc).

You may also want to consider a Treo 650. It offers a much better (resolution) screen and loads and loads of software. I have a great (free) video player (thus, my version of a video iPod), TomTom GPS software (not free, but one of the best software apps I've ever used) for use in the NSX, MP3 and streaming audio software, etc.....

The EVDO aspect of the T700 is very attractive, but my understanding is that it's pricey.

With a T650, for me, it'd be a step down to go to a 700.

Oh, I don't care for blackberrys. My experience with them is that the sound quality tends to be poor and they don't have the wealth of 3rd party software available to them that the Palm OS users have.

I managed to pick up a treo 650 for $25! Best phone I have ever bought. The blackberry's seem like their screen is way too dark even with the backlight on.

How in the world did you get one for $25???? I'd love to pick one up for my wife for that price!!!!!!!!

My friends dad was ranting about how he hated it, so I offered to buy it and said he would just give it to me for $25. His family isn't exactly struggling through life.

I got my wife a T600 (when they were out) that way. A friend of mine had several for his employees and didn't want 'em.

Anyway, Sig, the 650 is a great, great device. Feel free to give me a call to discuss.

Hey guys, I work for verizon. Dont waste your time with the blackberry. Reason being, even though theres a lawsuit, we all know its going to boil down to how much RIM is going to have to pay out. Problem is, with the amount of $$$ their going to have to pay, is their service going to decrease? This is what we'll find out in the months to come. Your best bet would be the treo 700 or XV 6700. Their both EVDO as well as equipped with windows mobile 5.0. Whats this mean to you? Well windows mobile 5.0 has the same email push service that the blackberrys use. But you have alot more expandable features with either one of those phones vs. the BB. I personally use the 6700 and love it. if you plan on using alot of web features and email, stay away from the 650, its not EVDO nor does it have the push email service. The 650 also runs on Palm OS vs. Poclet PC. This may cause some issues at your office when trying to sync it with a pc. Ive ran into some customers that have had issues. i use to use it and loved it, but since I also own a record label, I needed broadband access to the net to check record sales via highspeed. If you have any questions feel free to pm me:wink:
