bird flu pandemic...

It's a scary thought, if the imagined worst scenario comes true.

I noticed some of my friend's and family's reaction to this is to stop eating poultry. There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there. As long as the meat is properly cooked, even if it's an avian infected chicken/turkey/duck etc., properly cooking it kills the flu germs. It's not spread by eating poultry.

I'm not about to stop eating chicken because of this threat. Proper cooking kills it.

I do think it will kill millions here, some people we know. It is not a prion disease at all.

Pretty much feel like we're porked. I see a major change in how we deal with other's in the future (face masks).

I'm about to have a baby. I worry for her.

Personally very scared. We're going to see it.

Funny that you guys bring this up. My wife and I were eating at Johnny Rockets (burger joint) the other day and she ordered a chicken-something burger. She remembered about the bird flu and wanted to check the burger before she ate it. She cut it in half and guess what? It was a little red in the middle. Not pink but red. The waitress was nice enough to take it off our check. Better safe than sorry...

Why is everybody worrying about this so much? Even some people here in Australia are worried sick about the bird flu. I'm not suggesting we should be ignorant, but worrying isn't going to fix anything.

Back to the topic... so what colour calipers should a blue NSX have? :D

i think there is worldwide fear because (1) it's a relatively new issue for the general population to "deal with" and (2) in general, the public is learning that we're unprepaeed to handle it on a global basis.

as for the earlier poster who implied this is no different than aids or sars, i disagree: each of those were somewhat limited to relatively definable populations/segments of the global population. otoh, bird flu is transmitted by birds on a global basis through (among other things) migration patterns *AND* apparently has the ability to morph into variations fairly quickly.

i agree that worrying about it won't fix the problem(s).

I really do hate to be so damn negative all the time, but...

Now that the War on Terror has been put to bed, the War on Iraq has been lost, and Osama really has Bin Forgotten, the State Department is promoting the Avian Flu Hoax Conspiracy. Get yer wallet out cuz they're not paying for it.

The "Bird Flu Epidemic" must be believed.

It must be believed because it cannot be known.

It cannot be known because it does not exist, yet.

54 people dead in THREE years and no more than 100 suspected deaths, is not an epidemic by any valid measure!

Have you heard anything about the death by lightning epidemic?

Congress approved eight billion to fund against it, just like that.

# Odds of …
# death by assault in your lifetime: 182/1
# death by falling : 250/1
# that meteor striking the earth this year: 300/1
# death by firearm: 325/1
# death by poison: 1,200/1
# death in a car crash: 5,000/1
# death by choking on food or something else: 5,000/1
# death by drowning: 9000/1
# death by accidental hanging: 12,000/1
# death by murder: 20,000/1
# death by an animal drawn vehicle: 31,000/1
# death by dog attack: 700,000/1
# death in the bathtub: 1,000,000/1
# death by a tornado: 2,000,000/1
# death by falling out of bed: 2,000,000/1
# Odds of being killed in a terrorist WMD attack: 6,000,000/1

Mr. Donald Rumsfeld, who, until being sworn in as the 21st Secretary of Defense, served as Chairman of Gilead Sciences ( NASDAQ: GILD ) which is a biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercializes therapeutics to advance the care of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases. The company has seven commercially available products and focuses its research and clinical programs on anti-infectives. Headquartered in Foster City, California, Gilead has operations in North America, Europe and Australia. Mr. Rumsfeld excussed himself from making any policy decisions, and the US Surgeon General is MIA, but why is the Defence Dept. in charge? Anyone remember the antrax vaccine, or how about the small pox vaccine. Legionnaires, anyone? Influenza? How many vaccines are we funding? Isn't Paul Wolfowitz, war hawk for Iraq, now president of the world bank?

Republican Senator Richard Burr is doing his best to ensure that Americans will get lots of forced vaccinations in the event of a federally declared public health emergency, and he's also ensuring that if any American citizen experiences any debilitating effects, is injured, or dies from any viral cocktail that the government injects them with, they will have no legal recourse to sue the government, or the pharmaceutical companies that produced the vaccine.

The U.S. Biodefense and Pandemic Vaccine and Drug Development Act of 2005 (S. 1873), of which version was due to be finalized yesterday Oct 20, establishes the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Agency, or BARDA, ("I can't believe it's not BARDA") as the over-riding authority for development of "biodefense" drugs and vaccines in the United States, denies American citizens the right to obtain information in regards to those vaccines under the FOIA, and furthermore denies them the right to sue the government if they are harmed in any way by drugs or vaccines distributed or administered by the government.

The draft version of the Act can be downloaded here:

I tend to agree. Bushs approval rating is extremely low, and what better way to raise it then divert everyones attention from all the failures.

well if there really was an outbreak, they would have to contain it within 30 or so days, if not we'd all be dead. =o either way it wouldnt be bad to have fast action mobility just in case something like Turbo Small pox broke out, or they re-introduced the bubonic plague, bird flu or not we dont have any mechanisms to deal with outbreaks of anytype really, or any that would really be effective within a given time window. i mean it was less than 100 years ago that an outbreak killed 500,000 people in the united states and over 50 million worldwide (this was back in 1918)

Influenza Pandemics during the 20th Century

During the 20th century, the emergence of several new influenza A virus subtypes caused three pandemics, all of which spread around the world within a year of being detected.

From the CDC

* 1918-19, "Spanish flu," [A (H1N1)], caused the highest number of known influenza deaths. (However, the actual influenza virus subtype was not detected in the 1918-19 pandemic). More than 500,000 people died in the United States , and up to 50 million people may have died worldwide. Many people died within the first few days after infection, and others died of secondary complications. Nearly half of those who died were young, healthy adults. Influenza A (H1N1) viruses still circulate today after being introduced again into the human population in 1977.
* 1957-58, "Asian flu," [A (H2N2)], caused about 70,000 deaths in the United States . First identified in China in late February 1957, the Asian flu spread to the United States by June 1957.
* 1968-69, " Hong Kong flu," [A (H3N2)], caused about 34,000 deaths in the United States . This virus was first detected in Hong Kong in early 1968 and spread to the United States later that year. Influenza A (H3N2) viruses still circulate today.

Both the 1957-58 and 1968-69 pandemics were caused by viruses containing a combination of genes from a human influenza virus and an avian influenza virus. The 1918-19 pandemic virus appears to have an avian origin.

if people would stop sleeping in the GD chicken coup we wouldnt have these problems of avian flu getting Go Fast mods and infecting humans =(

thanks for the posts. yeah, i think many things our govt is doing / has done are reprehensible, too. i think many govts would be willing to invent an issue to take divert public attention - no doubt about it.

having said that, imho, the consipracy argument is seriously diminished by the fact that numerous nations who aren't in favor of the current administration (or the U.S. for that matter) appear to be seriously concerned about this.

time will tell, though.

Nabarro has said a new flu pandemic could kill between 5 million and 150 million people, but WHO's flu spokesman Dick Thompson said the agency considers a maximum death toll of 7.4 million a more reasoned forecast.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Sad part is the 149,950,000 that would die from an outbreak will never get to read this article because they live in 3rd world countries.

The pandemic of 1918-19 killed up to 40 million or 50 million people, WHO officials have said.
----------------------------------------------------------------
.....and roughly 500,000 of the 50,000,000 were in the USA. I would also bet out of the 500k US 99% of them had failing health before they got the flu.
