Best size Rims/Tires??

I tried searching, but couldnt find anything that everyone seemed to agree on. So far what I was thinking was 17x7.5 in the front with a 215/40/17 and 18x9 in the back with a 255/35/18. Should I go bigger in the front and back? Are the wheels the right size? I multiplied by 25.4 then 1.1 and those seemed to be the right sized tires for the wheels but I just wanted to make sure. Also what size offsets should I be running? This is for a 99 NSX btw. Thanks.

There is no universal "best". It all depends on your personal preferences - a combination of what "look" you want, what performance you want (and when), what tires you prefer to use, etc.

Thanks, maybe I should have been a little more specific. Ive heard that putting the wrong size tires on the car can lead to the traction control going off under the wrong circumstances. They say keeping the wheel/tire as close to the stock size helps this. I definetly want to go with the 17/18 inch combo, and I heard anything bigger then 225 in the front will rub. Id like to go 40 series in the front and 35 in the back, but Im open to suggestions.

Thanks

I have OZ Superleggeras in the size of 17x8 front and 18x9 rear. I use tires in the size 225x35x17 front and 265x35x18. This combination gives me a fantastic ride and it also looks awsom.

There is a little oversteer, because front is little low (215x40x17 is nearer to OEM). But that's what I like best.

In this combination I have no problems with TCS. But most of the the time I don't use TCS.

What about going bigger then 265 in the back. From what Ive found in the FAQ and searches, 215/40/17 seems to be the ideal setup for the front. I dont have any plans for major mods, so I dont think Id need the extra traction of a 275/285? So what rear width seems to be better, 255 or 265 or something else?

I currently have 17x7.5 and 18x9.
Its a good size for normal street and occasional track use.
If I were to do it over, I would have gotten 17x8 and 17x10 which would be
ideal for track use.

Another suggestion is 17x8 and 18x9.5. You should be able to fit slightly
larger tires. If you get larger rims, make sure you get lightweight rims
and good rubber.

I am doing similar research for my 91', and I am looking at 17x7.5, 18x9.5, with 215/40, and 265/35,

is that sound like the right setup, expecially with the wheel width. I've seen so many combinations out there, it's just getting confusing.

what about offsets on these wheels?

thanks,

Kenji, can you please elaborate. I always thought 16/17 was the ideal track combo unless one plans to do the Big Brake upgrade. BTW, what size tires would you consider optimal in terms of performace?

I have Volk AV3 wheels in the size 17x8 in the front with a +35 offset and 18x10 in the rears with a +44 offset. The tires that I am currently running are Bridgestone Potenza S-02 Pole Positions in the size 215/40/17 and 275/35/18 and I am lowered about 1" all around and I have no rubbing issues except for when I make some U-turns. Once in a while the front tires will touch/rub the inside wheel wells. Not a big issue. I took the car with these wheels to Thunderhill and had no problems whatsoever.
With these tires sizes, I am about .7" taller than stock on the front and rear. I even switched my rears back to stocks and it didn't affect my ABS. Hope this info helps. Good luck.

Best performance comes with 16" front and 17" rear rims; the OEM tires are quite excellent in those sizes. Performance is usually degraded with the larger 17"/18" rims - the wheel/tire combo tends to be heavier, and tire availability suffers as well. The only significant performance advantage of 17"/18" rims is the ability to put a big brake caliper kit on the car.

Again, on stock pre '97 brakes, what would be the best?

The first OEM are quite lighter:

1991-1993 Front: 15" x 6.5", 15.2 lbs
1991-1993 Rear: 16" x 8", 18.86 lbs

1994-Present Front: 16" x 7" , 16.75 lbs
1994-Present Rear: 17" x 8.5", 20.85 lbs

Do other lighter wheel exist that fits the NSX?
