Just want to find out the best place in SoCal to buy a K&N drop in filter. I'm looking for just the replacement filter for the oem airbox.

Who's got the best price on these?

i thought u where going to sell that thing . lol now im going to have to wait forever for your exhaust

I would look into getting an apexi filter. They filter the best and flow the best. Im not sure if you can jimmy it in a stock box.

does it change the sound at all if you have a K&N with on the stock box?

lol, I'm still selling it but I want to continue to maintain it properly.

I have a Comptech drop-in filter now and it does change the sound with the Cantrell scoop. I prefer the oiled cotton guaze element in th k&n over the foam of the Comptech.

If this replaces the oem air box, I'm not interested.

JUST filter. Same shape as stock. It also flows better and has more surface area than the K&N.

Unifilter is probably the most popular and common filter used on prime, along with stock. $46 shipped

I can definitely see the surface area difference between the uni and k&n. Thanks for the info

 im not a big fan of the foam filter. Im not sure how a little oil on filiments of pastic could filter things out.

If the UNI performance anything close to the HKS SUPERFLOW i would stay the hell away from it. last test they did i read using the oil on foam design like the uni showed that it filted next to nothing. The K&N was a lot better. the best one iwth best flow and filtration was the apexi duel velocity stack design... and its the filter i use on all my cars. Its a dry filter and wont have any problems with oil coating the MAF sensor wires and what not.

also had a HKS superflow once on my mr2... i took off the filter and the pipe inside was coated with dust. With a good filter like the apexi i have. I can run it 10000 miles and drag my finger across the inside of the intake pipe and get no dust on my fingers..... thats filtration. NO DUST AT ALL. Matter of fact, just was working on the car yesterday.

Well if UNI performans better than the HKS SUPERFLOW, it would be ok. If it is about the same filtering capasity, i would stay the hell away. All the dust and crap work its way into the engine oil and will eat away at the bearings.

just my 2 cents. I would stick with the K&N as it filter filtered very well and flowed good too.

as far as im concerned.... flow is over hyped. The differance in flow might yeld 0.01 HP between the K&N and UNI.... better yet, why need a filter at all? I have a buddy that runs a screen over his twin turbos  i laugh so hard when ever i see it. He has problems with his rod barings getting all scored up and he wonders why. Maybe some detonation, maybe some dust.

hey simon, i got some kitchen sponges, i'll superglue them togeather & pour virgin olive oil on it and you can use that to filter out the dust.

just looking at the picture of the uni filter makes me ooozy.

K&N has a spotchy track record based upon different tests done in different types motor vehicles. So the grass isn't too green on this side either:

Toyota off road guys have shown that the K&N filters were letting gunk get through more than stock.

SV650 sportbike guys have shown that the K&N filters were actually more restrictive than the stock filter and cutting down the HP output.

my own experience:

K&N on my last sportbike was letting lots of dirt in through the rubber seals, even covered in grease. Wore my valves out alot in 24,000 miles

K&N on all my trucks were letting dust in past the filter.

My Uni..... not sure yet, haven't checked it out in about 7,000 miles. Any prime members want to share???

I didnt say K&N was the best. APEXI is.

Ofcourse TRD/TOYOTA OEM will filter out better... have you seen their filter designs? Restrictive as hell, but filters very well.

JACK POT!!! JUST FOUND THE ARTICLE.

if you had 7000 miles on the car. Take out the uni filter, run your fingers along the intake tube and see what comes up.

Also im down in LA. The air has as much smog (dust and crap) as it does oxygen, maybe our results will be different we'll see.

I've got a used K&N filter you can buy. It is in great shape and I can give you a good deal on it. I live in the OC. PM me if you are interested.

The filters the toyota guys did the test on were pre-tacoma trucks. Not sure if there is much of a difference, but thought I'd point out an addition detail.

I can see how you'd agree (and I agree) that the foam HKS filter is as good as putting a sock over the intake (if not worst) but apples to apples (HKS to Uni) isn't nearly cut and dry. It's more Granny Smith to Red Delicious. Both apples, but both different. I believe the uni filters are multi stage filters, and of course I could be wrong. But there are two different Uni's for the NSX out that I'm aware of, obviously old and new. The test articles states basically "extracts of Revspeed Magazine, August 1999". When the actual test was conducted I do not know. I am fairly certain that the new Uni filter is probably only a couple years old.

Now if only we had the means to test out "Stock vs Uni vs K&N" for our purposes shall we know for certain.

Oh does Apexi make a drop in for us by any chance?

the HKS (green nuke <---- my name for them) are also multi stage filters.

The top layer is much more course than the second sub layer. About 1/2 down the filter, the opening on the sponge dramaticlly becomes smaller. Im thinking about 1/3 the size of the top layer spacing. However, its still too big to filter out dust :)

Im not sure but i think the UNI filter is the same 2 layer design. Apexi only makes the Duel cone velocity stacks like shown in the picture. I have heard that you can place the cone in the box. Which will fit, but you need to work the piping so that it fits the hole at the lower bottom side of the filter box.

I been wanting to do this as i want to used the stock box to bring in cool air, nowever, im too damn lazy.

Right now i have the cone filter bolted onto an flange i made with home depo parts. It works good the way it is and keeps things clean. I'll see if i can get the filter to fit the stock box. Once i do, i'll see if i can get pictures.

Hey Hotrod,

how much you want for the K&N? also how many miles is on it? Does it need to be cleaned?

thanks

How do you clean that dry element? Or is it a $75 use, then toss?

You mean like this?

they dont make inferior designs:biggrin: so no drop in.

The picture you have there is exactly what im talking about. The filter will definitly fit in the box. I tired before but never went to HD to get the piping.

It should not be that hard. I'll tackle it as soon as i get off my ass and get the NSx off the lift.

169

wow no wonder dali guy is rolling in the dough  Go get the apexi filter off ebay for .. sometimes a very good price. I got 2 at the same time from an RX7 intake auction. rx7 has 2 intake tubs... anyways. got it for like 80-90$

and the flange you can find at HD for 3.50$ and the piping probably another $5

Any apexi intake will work off ebay. They are all the same filter but have different flages to fit the cars. So you dont have to just look for the filter. Acturally i got 2 laying around somewhere

you dont clean it. It lasts forever

I heard of people using a vaccum on the filter from the outside. I tired it once. I forgot about the results.

Its a dry filter so no oil.
