I looking to purchase a corded or cordless impact gun for the header install on 91. I don't want to purchase a compressor unless it is necessary if the cordless ones are not strong enough. I would really prefer on that is cordless. How many ft/lbs should be necessary? Should I get 1/2 or 3/8.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no substitute for PSI....
you will problably be very displeased with eletric type impact guns.

actually, if you want a cordless impact, ingersoll rand has some nice 18 volt 1/2 inch impacts, with over 150+ ft lbs of tq, same with snap on's, or you can go with their smaller 14.6 volt 3/8s with like 50+ ft lbs of tq, both made by snap on and ingersoll. or if you want a lighter version, makita makes a 12.6 version of the 3/8s with a lighter battery. I use them at work, if you have an questions feel free to message me

I agree with jgtcnsx. DO NOT use an impact to put your headers on. You need to use a torque wrench and torque your headers to spec. If not you could mess some stuff up. Could even snap off a stud. And THAT would NOT be good.

That's just my $.02

I just wanted to use it for removal of the exhaust bolts and some other bolts. It should be ok to use it for removal correct???

i think it'd be the only way to do it without using a cheater bar =)
unless you have forearms like bruce lee or can drop kick those deep seated bolts (lui kang style)

I did the header job not too long ago. Getting the actual manifold bolts off was easy (after spraying them with good ol' PB Blaster). Just about any wrench that fits can get them off. The problem is the dreaded front beam bolt. That's where you need a freaking 500 lb/foot impact wrench, with a 2 foot extension.

The first time I did the exhaust I used a breaker bar and it was extremely hard. I sprayed the bolts multiple times and left it over night and it still took alot of force. Do you think the cordless impact guns mentioned in the previous post should sufficient to remove exhaust bolts and that front beam bolt.. The ones with 150ft/lb?

I don't think 150 lb/ft is enough if the bolts are seriously tight. I was removing an old header, not the OEM exhaust manifold, and the bolts right on the head were not tough to remove. There were no others (no manifold heat shield bolts, etc). So it may be tougher for you than it was for me.

I didn't have a powerful pneumatic impact wrench, so I cobbled together this for removing that front motor mount / front beam bolt. Kinda Rube Goldberg, but it worked!

Holy cow captain cave man! (kidding)

That's a whole tool box you got linked together there!

If you have money to spend on tools, do it. It never hurts to have the proper tools on hand to do the job the right way. It'll save you headaches in the long run and reduce risks.

Yeah, I agree, good advice. Of course when you're up to your elbows in grease under the car in mid job, you make do with what you've got. I posted that pic in another thread here before, and someone described it as a "ghetto tool".
