The NSX is a hybrid car.  Look in the trunk and you will see that the trunk floor is very high.  That's because there is a series of 48 batteries underneath, which power an electric motor.  The NSX runs on battery power at lower speeds, and the gas engine is off.  When you are at maximum acceleration, based on the angle of the accelerator and the RPM level, the gas engine starts and adds power to the electric.  The electric motor is the equivalent of 130 hp, and the gas engine adds another 270 (for the '91-96, 290 for the '97-05), for a total of 400 hp when needed.
