Battery clamp problem

I've just replaced the battery but the clamps will not tighten securely around the battery terminal posts. They are as tight as possible but slide right off the posts. I called the store where I bought the battery, told the sales guy the problem, and he confirmed that all battery terminal posts are a standard size. But, he also told me that he noticed a small thin strip of metal on one post of the battery I traded in. He didn't know what it was but he saved it. It seems to me it's some kind of spacer since using that would be the only way the clamps would tighten securely enough so they don't slip off. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, does anyone have any suggestions of what to use as a spacer?

By the way, the car is a '95 and the last battery change was done at the dealership.

Thanks for any help,
Leland

The connectors are stretched out. Someone overtightened them and stretched them. Actually it is pretty common problen with all Honda's.
You can replace the negative side cable assembly at a resonable cost, about $25 (32600-SL0-003). You will need to either replace the connector on the positive side, or reshim it as done before.

Unfortunately the positive side replacement goes from the battery to the starter, which would be quite a bit of work to replace the entire assembly from Acura. FYI, the positive cable assy is 32410-SL0-A01 $150

Mine were streched as well. This may not be the best thing to do, but I took a razor blade and took a scrap piece of wire and took the sheathing off. then wrapped copper wire from botom of terminal to top. The copper was not that thick, but made a huge difference and post are snug now.
