the starter has a starting system drive gear that should engage the flywheel when the key is in the start position and disengage when the engine starts rotating at a prescribed RPM. The sound may be the drive gear staying engaged with the flywheel. A way to check this is BEFORE starting the car, put it in 1st gear and rock the car. If you hear a clunk, then the starting gear has just disengaged from the flywheel. As mentioned by Briank, it could be due to a flywheel with damaged and/or missing teeth. Also it could be that your starter drive gear is damaged and/or needs some lubrication.
