Bad starter?

Sometimes when I start my car it makes the sound like the car is already running and you try to start it. I put the car in gear and roll it back and it starts up. Is it something to do with the flywheel? Not sure what to do to fix it.

Thanks~

Could be the starter but if it works after bumping the engine over a little it more likely you have a bad spot on the fly wheel ring gear and it needs to be replaced. Pull off the inspection cover turn the engine with a wrench on the crank pully bolt and take a look at all the teeth. Also never turn the engine counter clockwise.

the starter has a starting system drive gear that should engage the flywheel when the key is in the start position and disengage when the engine starts rotating at a prescribed RPM. The sound may be the drive gear staying engaged with the flywheel. A way to check this is BEFORE starting the car, put it in 1st gear and rock the car. If you hear a clunk, then the starting gear has just disengaged from the flywheel. As mentioned by Briank, it could be due to a flywheel with damaged and/or missing teeth. Also it could be that your starter drive gear is damaged and/or needs some lubrication. See page 23-79 in the attached service manual for a starter system check and other related info in near by pages.

Good luck...Bob

I actually just put in a Jun chromoly flywheel about 5000 miles ago so Brian says it might just be the starter...

there are a bunch of detailed threads on here about how to take the starter out if you use the search.
