Axle rebuild

Just wanted to share some pictures of the recent rebuild I did on my axles. Disassembled, degreased and measured all parts. Three of the four joints were still well lubricated and measured good, besides three bearing inner races that had begun to spall, and were replaced. Passenger side inner joint had slowly leaked nearly all its grease out from the boot seam, and was more worn that the others. Tripod cup and bearings on this joint were replaced with low mileage parts from a spare axle.

Car has 105kmi, and a slight vibration while on the gas at highway speeds is what led to this project. I believe exhaust heat was the culprit for the leaking boot/worn joint. Used Redline CV-2 grease for reassembly, sandblasted and painted the joint exteriors.

This repair was much more economical than two new axles from Acura

Worst of the spalled races.

Good info. Did you use Honda/Acura boot kits? If so, why use Redline grease vs the the one that comes with the new boots?

Where did you get the bearings? Are they available from Honda?

Yes, used the Honda boot kits. I figured with all the time I was putting into this project, I might as well use the best grease I could get. Although opinions vary, I have heard good things about Redline grease. It's 800+ degree f dropping point is also among the best in the industry.

I don't think Honda offers the bearings individually. All bearing parts were measured with a micrometer to determine if they were worn, only the best were reused. Any that needed replacement were taken from a spare Acura Legend and NSX axle I have.
