I have a CTSC auto. I am considering installing a cooler for my transmission fluids.

Has anyone done it before?
What are the benefits?
What kind of cooler should i get?
where should the cooler be mounted?
Where and how are the piping of the cooler connected?

Are there any negative effect of installing the transmission fluid cooler?

Any advice, comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

P.S. I posted this on the owner's section and didn't get any reply. Hopefully the DIY section readers will contribute their opinion and advice.

nsxinkl,

On the NSX, i wouldn't know EXACTLY. But on most cars, and i will mention high-power AUTOMATIC vehicles (AMGs. Turbo-Volvos), most of these do have ATF Coolers. The fact is, that the higher the fluid temp, the viscosity thinens and shifts start to slip, wearing may occur faster, etc. Bottom Line: Heat is one of the leading wear of a transmission, be it manual or automatic. A GOOD ATF Fluid is also recommended, I've used Red Line ATF way back, these days i've even posted that there are like 4 types of ATFs from Red Line, i never really got a response on which would be the best for the NSX.

I haven't started to work on the NSX, saving up for a nice project, all-at-once kinda thing, but you can count your horses that i am getting an oil-cooler and Red Line ATF.

Also, down the road, I might get EITHER the Ritmo A/T Computer OR the Level 10 Torque Converter, probably the Ritmo, since it replicates the manuals and don't need to open the tranny. Hum... then again, you are supposed to get massive acceleration with the Level 10 TC.

I hope this helps, atleast a bit.

Shaw,

An automatic nsx already has a AT cooler. With some creativity, I think you can replace the oem cooler with a larger cooler.
