Generally you will be required to comfortly shifting the automatic as you were driving with a manual trans. I would think the constant gear change at high rpm will put a lot of stress to the auto transmission fluid and torque converter.
Say, if you have already checked your transmission oil and if the transmission still good (no slipping at any circumstances). I would say it wouldn't hurt to take your automatic nsx on track... it's still an nsx afterall...
I would think the Brakes of an automatic trans. car will take a lot more abuse than the manual equipped car.
For a novice student, it will do just fine. I have done several track events with the Audi Club in which there were several owners with RS6 (tiptronic). I was informed that it's easier to focus on learning lines with the automatic (rather than worrying about when to downshift or upshift).
Are you talking about really racing/taking the car to the limit? Or just learning to drive on the track? And are you talking about a street car automatic (NSX or otherwise) or something far more sophisticated?
If you're a novice or intermediate still learning the basics of car control in a track day environment, you'll do just fine with a normal street legal automatic, but beyond that, you won't be very happy, or even safe.

This topic has a habit of coming up on a regular basis. I track my A/T occasionally and autox it all the time over the last 2+ years. It's not a sport shifter model. No tranny problems to report. I do change the fluids on a very regular schedule. If you're worried about the car taking the punishment - don't. Of course mine could blow up this weekend but after over 2 years of monthly outings, it's still going strong.
Compared to a manual? Well, that's obvious. Why wouldn't you want more HP and torque? You have to learn to drive an A/T first of all. You just do certain things different because of the way the tranny works. Can you learn to drive a great line in an A/T? Sure you can. Will you beat a driver of equal skills who's using a manual? No. Will you have lots of fun and drive home in traffic with a latte in one hand the whole way? Yes.
Make the best of what you have and if you don't like it.... change it.

Oh, I just read that other forum that was linked above about A/Ts. Why do so many folks think that you would drive the track with the car in "D"? What kinda knucklehead would do that? It may be an auto but you actually can shift it yourself. Duh!

cause that's how they drive everyday!! Speaking of Knuckleheads some probably didn't know what other numbers appears on the shift gate stand for... or better yet, "the salesperson told me the "2" is for snow driving"
one thing it's good for beginners is that on an automatic they will get familier with the downshift from high speed and not worrying over-reved and blow the engine, which I had seen novice driving their Integra/Civic R's and did such both on road course or even stupid late night street highway battles...
