Are these the symptoms

When using the A/C this past weekend on a trip I couldn't get the heat to work when it was cold outside or the A/C to work when it was warm out.
It didn't matter how low the car warmed up or not, it wouldn't make a difference. Is this telling me the control head is now malfunctioning?

I did that test. I assume that when it says 'Push ON/OFF and AUTO at the same time' that I was supposed to hold them down. Upon doing that the word 'Mode' illuminated. According the chart that means the in-car sensor is bad. Would that be the #3 in the following illustration?

It calls it a aspirator. Is that one and the same?
