Anyone Using Spacers

Just wondering if anyone had any clearence problems when going to a 17-18 combo with after market wheels. I just got my Antera 121s from CEC direct which are suppose to be the last new set they had. I went with 17x7.5 with a 35 offset and the rears are a 18x10 with a 45 offset. So before i went to get the tires mounted i bolted the rims on to check them the fronts fit and clear the brake calipers fine. The problem is the rears they touch the brake calipers slightly so i called back to CEC and they said i would need a 5mm spacer. They said some NSXs need a spacer and some dont so i'm waiting to get the spacer to try them again before i take them for sure. Is this a common thing when going to such a wide rim or should i not worry about this.

After my research, if you want to widen your track and fill out the wheel well with your stock wheels, then you should get H&R hub-centric spacers. If you need a few millimeters to clear your brake calipers, you could risk using a small spacer... but the concensus is that its not too good to get large generic spacers. If you want to fill your wheel wells out cleanly, getting new wheels with a larger offset works well too. (thats what I did. TE-37s 40mm offset)

I know some NSX's are using the same size (and offset) rear wheels and have no problems with caliper clearance. I believe it's all dependant on the wheels themselves, and it's style.

If you want to use/run a spacer, I would suggest an adapter instead. H&R makes a 5mm adapter that would be much better than a spacer alone. Contact either Andrie or Enrique (pronto3000) for some assistance. They can give you the exact model #'s for the adapters, and they are also hub centric.

Finally got my hub-centric spacer today from CEC they said they where custom made for the NSX. It is a 5mm so i snapped it in and bolted the rims on and they just clear the caliper so i think they should work. I will get the tires mounted on the rims Monday and will let you know how they fit and next Friday it's Konis and Eibachs cant wait.

I recommend you change the lug nuts you were originally going to use. When you add a spacer you're not going to get as much thread engagement on the lug nuts. I recommend switching to a shanked lug nut, sometimes referred to as an ET style nut for extended thread). It has a little extension to make up for the spacer.

You shouldn't use your factory nuts in either case. Most likely your wheels are drilled with a conical lug seat and the factory nuts have a ball seat. This makes for a situation where nuts loosen and wheels come off the car.

CEC is a high quality dealer so I imagine they supplied you with new lug nuts and this is a moot point, but if they didn't you might want to ask. They are Conical 12x1.5 ET.

As for the spacer, I agree with everyone else. Nobody likes spacers. A short spacer (5 mm and below) as long as they're hub centric will work fine and you shouldn't have any problems. Fikse uses hub-centric spacers that they bolt to many of their wheels and I don't believe they have any problems (and they make very nice wheels). At HRE we cut wheels specific to the offset required to avoid it altogether.

Generic spacers should be avoided if at all possible unless they are very thin so that you don't lose hub-centricity.

Also, if you have to go larger, you should use a studded adapter. You bolt the adapter to the car and then bolt the wheel to the adapter. The adapter should be both hub-centric and wheel-centric, meaning it should have a male and female look to it with the female side looking like your wheel and the male side looking like your car. There are many companies out there that cut them specific to specs out of billet.

In any case, you should be fine as long as you change your lug nuts.

Good luck,

Alan

Alan CEC did provide me with the lug nuts when i bought the wheels but they did not send a new set when a got the spacer. When i bolted them on to check it felt like they had alot of thread yet but where can i get the lugs you are talking about.

Actually, did you check to see if the lug nuts that CEC sent to you were already shanked? If they are shanked they have a little cylindrical extension at the bottom of the cone that reaches farther down into the lug hole. Normal conical lug nuts just end at the bottom.

Hey Alan, how bout giving us NSXCA member a good discounts?
smile.gif

I'm in need of custom build wheels 17x8 and 17x10 (F&R respectively). Why I said custom build is because I need it to clear my Porsche brakes upfront. Preferably in offset 50 or even 55 if possible.

Feel free to private me.

Thanks
