Anyone tried matching the JDM lights by painting?

I had a crazy idea to buy JDM l&R lenses, and match them with a US market center piece, spoiler LED and the red 1/4 panel lights. I was thinking of a clear laquer spray paint or automotive paint over the US market parts might get them all the same (darker) color.

Has anyone tried this? This is a close as I have come to a solution by googling.

by that rational, why not just paint all the lenses? I think that would be a great idea. The match would be perfect....

I've seen people use simular product on other cars, however, to get the best result. (glossy finish) you need to paint three or four coats of these stuff and maybe finish it off with a clear coat, by the time you finished with it, it's gonna look very very dark.....

Was hoping to keep the amber turn signals. Painting them all would be a decent fall back plan.

SndSoul - Looks nice and smooth, what you use to prep the lenses and buff out the raised DOT lettering - some sort of plastic polish I assume?

TBell - do you mind sharing whatever info you have on trying to match them? (ballpark costs, paint, who did it etc?)
