Just wondering if anyone has installed the
2002 style rear lip spoiler on their NSX.

I am interested in finding out if this makes
ANY difference in the amount of dust that is
accumulated on the rear bumper.

Any 2002 owners who might be able to comment
on the amount of dust on the rear bumper??

For what is worth.

Just checked with the local Acura Dealer,
the lip spoiler does come painted from the
factory but their asking price is $549.00
for the piece. That is way too expensive.

It also looks like it requires 8 retainer
clips to be installed. So this probably
means that the trunk needs to be drilled for
installation.

I had assumed a tape-on type spoiler like
the one used on the E46 M3 trunk spoiler
but I was wrong..

I tried researching the bumper dust issue for another thread, here is what I found out:

The wedge shape creates a vacuum around the back quarter panels and at the back of the car sucking up anything, brake dust, road dirt, whatever. There are three vertexes formed by the greenhouse: right side, over the top, and left side, which converge over the engine hatch glass, and stay attched to the car as they pass over the trunk. The rear spoiler helps detatch this air, creating a bit of vacuum over the bumper.

The new lip on the '02 is designed to help the air still attached to the trunk lid detatch from the car. My guess is this would create a bigger zone of vacuum. However, the new diffuser looks as if it lets air through it better, rather than spitting it upward with those verticle slats on the older one. Then again, the '02 back is lower, so the overall area of vacuum must be larger...oh, never mind!

I remembered to check it out last trip to the dealer. Looks like it should just stick on, the attachment points are most likely for proper placement. Pricey, but I was tempted to order it to fill the gap between my aftermarket wing and the trunk, but then I noticed that it is missing from the NSX-R.

Major Stoner,
Wow love the insight on the areo parts. I made one that matches the new one out of carbon fiber and used double sided tape and it seems to be holding fine.
If you have done a bunch of research on aero parts I would live to pick your brain. I can send you a carbon fiber trunk lip for your time.
hand made with pride in my garage.

Looks easy enough to make one from a fiberglass spoiler from another car's aftermarket lip, and just sand the ends to fit/shape. I post most info that I find, if I think it is fun or relevent. I find it interesting that they have increased the downforce in the back of the 2002 NSX, and even more on the NSX-R (which is missing about 40 lbs. up front with the missing spare and CF hood).

I get plenty of dust that seems to accumulate quickly.

"Running Ham"? I think the only person brave (read: smart) enough to campaign an NSX, and WIN, deserves more respect than that.

But to the point, PD has his trunk lid reshaped to dish upwards to the height of the top of the original wing. His big wing is used for downforce.

Our rear wing was designed to do four things:

1. Enhance high speed directional stability.

2. Reduce yaw moment.

3. Reduce turbulence.

4. Achieve neutral lift.

Oh yeah, it looks cool too. But notice, it was not designed to produce downforce or keep the rear bumper clean. Dusting the rear bumper is a trade-off for having achieved the other goals of wind tunnel development.

I'm not sure what the 2002 lip has addressed with the add-on lip.

FYI-It says "Runningham" on the back of PD's car.

When I cooked lunch for him at Sears Point and Laguna Seca he asked me to call him Peter or PD, not Mr. Cunningham (the teacher in me), but if Runningham is good enough for him...

My bad.

Okay, Peter it is.

(I hope the 'D' isn't for Dieter.)

:-)

Maybe "dieter" would fit. I know he's tired of carrying all that "rewards" weight around.

Or wait, you're not referring to the lunches I cooked for the team, are you?

It is officially called...

the sub-spoiler in the parts list.

The sub-spoiler is hollow and made from ABS plastic. It has a bracket attached that seems to go through a hole in the trunk of an '02, where the striker is attached, perhaps to transfer downforce through the latch. It needs to be roto-tooled off. You will also need to get some 3M two-sided tape as it only comes with weather stripping.

I know a company named Autobac makes an aftermarket version. I think it is available in Carbon Fiber too. I saw that it uses 3M tape rather than drilling holes like the factory version.

Not sure but I think the price is around $300?

It looked really good!
