Anybody know if there is anyone in or near the St. Louis area that can do a quality rebuild on a snap ring range transmission at a reasonable price? I was lied to by the seller of the vehicle. I have contacted Mark Basch in Phoenix and that is the only contact I have seen on this forum. Please help as I am sweating bullets over this whole situation.

It depends on what you consider to be "reasonable". If the transmission needs rebuilding, it will be expensive no matter who does it.

You could have a local dealer do it, or you could ship your car to one of the NSX-knowledgeable dealers in Chicago or Milwaukee or Dallas. They know what they're doing, but they won't be cheap.

You MIGHT save money by flying Barn Man in from Nashville to fix it - but some of those savings will get absorbed in his travel costs. This is probably your best bet, though.

Please provide me with the details and contact info for these different dealers. I have found it to be expensive, but have found a reasonable rebuild for $2200 plus installation.

I know this is going to be expensive, but I have no choice here. I have to get it done and/or seek recourse from the seller.

Barn Man (Barney) can be reached at [email protected] or 615-895-3223.

There are two St. Louis Acura dealers:

Frank Leta Acura, St. Louis - (314)849-4444

Dave Mungenast St. Louis Acura, Manchester - (314)822-2872

Perhaps sjs or matteni can advise you on their quality.

There are three dealers in Chicago and Milwaukee that have a huge amount of NSX experience and all are highly recommended:

Woodfield Acura, Hoffman Estates (12 miles west of O'Hare) - 847-519-9550

Pauly Acura, Highland Park (25 miles north of downtown Chicago) - 847-433-8200

Acura of Brookfield, Brookfield (10 miles west of downtown Milwaukee) - 262-785-1918

Goodson Acura is in Dallas, which is quite a bit further from you than these.

You can also look up Acura dealer information on Acura's website here.

I will give BarnMan a call or an email. An Acura dealership here in St. Louis is the one that gave me the outrageous estimate, so I am trying to find a NSX specialist rather than a dealership. Unless, the one I took it to is much higher than the others.

jlindy,

First of all - welcome to St. Louis NSX ownership. There are now many of us here in St. Louis who have been exchanging emails and getting together on a somewhat regular basis.

As for Snap Ring transmission help - assuming your transmission snap ring is OK - there is really no need to replace the case unless the snap ring has failed.

If it has not failed - be carefull to watch for the warning signs and replace it with a rebuild from Basch, Dali, or buy a used one.

If it has failed then you either need a new transmission if you have been driving on it a while or you need to replace the top 1/2 of the case with a good one.

So - do you think it has broken? It is very easy to check and see and I might be able to help you figure it out. I am in the Manchester / Ballwin area and may have some time Sunday to walk you through inspection.

Remember - not ever snap ring range transmission will fail and if you know the warning signs - you will be OK.

As for myself - I have a snap ring range car and plan on driving it till the clutch goes out or the snap ring fails - then dealing with it then.

Good luck / hope we can meet soon...

According to this thread, jlindy's snap ring has already failed.

AFAIK there are no non-dealer experienced NSX mechanics in St. Louis. That's no surprise; I'm pretty sure there are only around half a dozen nationwide (including Basch Acura Service in AZ/CA, NSX Modified and Foreign Affair and Don's Hilltop in CA, and Barn Man in TN, who is sort of dealer affiliated; also Bruce Pettitt in CA, and probably ACR Motorsports in CA, since they seem to know a lot about the NSX when they post here).

thanks for all your help and input. I am still working on finding a authorized tech for NSX's, but I think the Barn Man might be my closest and best option. Can anybody share their past experiences with the work Barn Man does?

BarnMan does incredible work, and is the only person I would even let touch my NSX besides myself. He's done all the oil changes on my car, as well as my 30k service, the timing belt, and just recently installed a Taitec GT Lightweight exhaust on it.

You'll not find a more honest, dependable person to work on your car, believe me.

I sure wish he was in St. Louis.
