Any intake that will add horsepower?

Do you know of any intake on the market that will actually add horsepower, or do they all just look cool and add to the sound of the car? I have added a Taitec Lightweight exhaust and headers and would like to know what else I can do to add more power.

as has been discussed before, any aftermarket pod filter increases the chances of damage to the engine, due to the dirt particle size that is allowed to pass through the filter material. This may be prevented slightly by a lot of regular oiling and cleaning. I had one in my crx, it did make the car sound better (when the pod was clean!) performance wise it was hard to tell.

They are popular/used on race cars because the engine has to be rebuilt often anyway, so longevity is not a concern.

My father was a mechanic and used to build the 'ol v8 modded engines he said the same thing also.

Ive been told and seen that a cold air intake/heat shield configuration of some type would be of some benefit.

It is also very hard to get a number on how much an intake might help with generating additional horsepower because unless it uses some type of ram air or is able to take in cooler air it won't help at all.

Both of these don't really show up on a dyno because the car isn't moving.

From my limited experience with other cars, I would guess that a car that uses ram air that takes in outside air might give you about 5hp.

All of the intakes that I have seen for the NSX allow larger particles into the engine. The chance of damaging your car by allowing larger particles into the engine is very real and in my opinion not worth the risk for the small increase in power.

The difference in sound is really nice though!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Thanks, i've used K&N filters in most of my cars, including my NSX for about 25 years without any problems. Are you guys including these in your judgement to be harmful to my engines?

I wonder.... Of all the people who switched from aftermarket air filter back to oem air filter, do you feel any drop in performance?

Henry.

K&N intake w/ comptech stainless steel headers and exhaust...

hmmm... There is a potential NSX purchase I am considering, in which the car has a K&N intake/filter (?), Comptech's stainless steel exhaust and headers. Is the aforementioned intake upto par w/ the other two mod'z? Someone even mentioned to me the OEM intake is better...(something about cold air w/ that vs. warm air w/ the K&N) I'd appreciate any insights... Thanks. :)

I had a K&N cone filter and a Fujitsubo exhaust on my former '96 auto cp. and dynoed 272 DIN-hp which is about 16 hp more than the stock 256-hp-number. Although that may be okay for a street driven car I wouldn't use the cone filter on the racetrack due to the much higher temperatures in the engine compartment and (related to german Autobahn) slower average speeds at higher rpms.

I use the K&N OEM replacement filter in the stock intake system now for about 4 years (always checked, cleaned and oiled after about 1,000 track or 10,000 street kilometers) with no harm. OTOH I had no remarkable improvement in power or sound.

For me the only sensible intake mod for the track would be a JGTC system where you take fresh air from the roof through the rear window and a special intake manifold. I expect to get more and cooler air than from the stock side intake - not necessarily to gain power but to avoid the decrease of power under hot conditions - nothing you should worry about in a street driven car.

Check out the filter test on the dali racing page. Stock filter pretty much beat all but maybe one aftermarket. Loss of torque is the key here.

Now, there are reports/roumors of the special carbon fiber aibox with the apexi cone filter that are supposed to work, but it is very expensive. Detlef tested it on a 2002 NSX-R and said it was very good. A search here should find that thread.

So if you do this, do it right. I took out my drop.in K&N after I did this little test:

just curious but will the AIS (air induction System) that SOS is selling give any gains? thinking about buying that because i really don't want to install a intake system from what ive been reading. and also is the comptech intake worth it?
thanx guys

Do you know of any intake on the market that will actually add horsepower, or do they all just look cool and add to the sound of the car?

Most of the cone type replacements just look and sound cool. Their downfall is taking warm air from the engine compartment instead of cool, more dense, air from outside the car, like the OEM intake. As a result, they do not make more horsepower. They look and sound hot, but are not cool. :D

There are some intakes that do (or should) provide some horsepower gains.

Comptech claims that their carbon fibre airbox adds eight horsepower. Note that it takes about three hours to install it. But what the heck, it is 8 hp!

Cantrell and Dali both sell an air intake that keeps the stock box (and, I believe, does not work with the Comptech box without some modifications). Science of Speed also sells the Cantrell Air Intake Sysytem. Both are modelled on the instake that Honda used on its Lemans winning NSX. There has been considerable debate on whether it provides any horsepower gain. But knowing Honda's engineering excellence, they would not have gone to all of the effort if it did not provide some horsepower gains. I have one on my NSX and the sound is awe inspiring. Do I notice any gains? No, but the NSX engine is so highly tuned to begin with (and my butt is probably so badly calibrated ;) ) that it would be hard to notice.

The issue of whether a drop-in OEM replacement filter produces any benefit or causes any engine maladies is also the subject of much debate. I use K&N drop-in OEM replacements on all my cars. On one, an Isuzu Trooper, it made a huge improvement, leading me to believe the OEM filter was very restrictive. On my NSX and my 3 series BMW I noticed no difference other than a bit more noise on the NSX.

Here is a link more about Ram air, but good info.

Link-Ram Air

I have never seen an aftermarket air filter make more HP on any Motorcycle I have tested.

If you think a higher flow filter makes more power, try removing the stock air filter and go for a drive, for sure no filter can flow more than no filter.
