Any advice on NSX price?

Hi, long-time lurker, first time poster.

I've been visiting Prime almost daily for the last year or so, researching what will definitely be my next "toy". I'm just starting to get serious about buying an NSX and thought I would get some Primer's opinions on an NSX for sale in Montreal through Kijiji. (at the risk of drawing more attention to it)

I haven't included the link, as there are no pictures of the actual car, and not much info.

It's a 93, Red on Black with 158km, that's the good, now the bad:

1. Missing headlights assemblies, Air box, and some other "plastic" pieces, that were apparently stolen off it while in underground parking.
2. Some suspension damage from hitting a curb, which also wrecked one of the side skirts. (the owner says it needs a new cross-member)
3. No maintenance records, but again the owner says the timing-belt was done before he bought it.

I know the importance of making sure that all required maintenance is up to date on the NSX, and if I were to buy it, I would immediately replace the timing belt, hoses, fluids, etc... (I can do these myself, not afraid of getting my hands dirty)

Just wondering if anyone else has any thoughts of potential problems, or costs, what to look for when I go see it, or for that matter knows the history of this car.

The asking price is $14995, I talked to the owner on the phone, and he seems honest enough, although he doesn't really know the NSX (he swears it's a factory original 6 speed, etc..). Looks like it might be a way to get myself an NSX I can work on over time to get it back to snuff.

Thanks guys

Mike

Hey

welcome aboard nsxprime...

In my opinion i would spend a bit more money or save up a bit more and buy a good example nsx...seems too much of a hassle and by the time you make it road worthy it would end up costing as much as buying that nice example nsx in the first place...

but for me it would have to be you get what you pay for..and this seems to be the case..

Factory 93...6-speed...not that I am aware of.

Lot of areas you could burn money on, getting new/missing parts. Bringing car up to date on maintenance. Also not knowing what has been done and needs to be done would be frustrating.

Walk away.

Damage + missing parts + no maintenance history + unknowledgable owner (6-spd?) + crazy-low price (even with the damage & missing parts)= this sounds most like a scam, or a money pit.

In my opinion, a '93 with those kms and moderate condition in Canada would run you in the $36-39K range at the absolute lowest. To me, the stated damage and missing parts do not explain the over $20K delta between "typical '93" and "'93 with damage".

If you want to pursue this, get the VIN, Google & carfax the hell out of it, check Prime, and get the story on this car- as it seems waaaay too good to be true. As it says elsewhere on this site: the most expensive NSX to own is the cheapest one you can buy.

If you are looking for an early-model NSX to fit your budget there are planty of options, especially if you are willing to do "work on it" over time, and are qualified to do some routine maintenance items yourself. Find a car with some sort of history and a lot less mystery.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

PASS !

I lurked on this forum quite a bit before posting, as you did, and just bought my NSX.

This one doesn't look good at all.

The accident may not have been declared to the insurance, so the car may be a "rebuilt" one without the title that usually comes with the status. Coming from a seller that confuses 6 and 5 speed transmissions, I wouldn't trust anything concerning the past repairs.

Maintenance without proofs is no maintenance. It may be alright for a $1000 winter DD, but not for a potentially collectible NSX.

I would be wary of having a NSX with stolen airbox and headlight assemblies while parked in a underground parking ! What kind of shady story !

Let's say you put it a realistic $10 000 in repairs and up-to-date preventive care (looks like a big budget, but really, it isn't), that would still be a $25K, accidented, repainted, 158 000km (assuming they are not miles ?) NSX.
And then assume you will have trouble reselling it to anybody who knows NSX.

Be patient, find another one.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Everyone seems to be thinking the same thing I was; it's too good to be true.

I'm waiting for the seller to get back to me with the VIN and some pictures, from there I will Google the crap out of it, and maybe go to Montreal to see it in person. I'm curious to see just how rough it is, and also to see if his story holds water.

I'll keep you posted.

These are scary statements for any NSX, these suspension pieces are very expensive.
No maintenance records is a bit less scary, however with the VIN number you can trace the selling dealer and track down the original owner (assuming it a Canadian Car) and possible service records.

At 158KM, it not a lot of K's for an NSX that is 18 years old, that is ~ 8700 KM per year, which is a bit more that the average of 5K per year for most Canadian NSX's.

If the owner is motivated, perhaps it is worth a look and offer a really low price, say $9K. However, you must do your homework first.

From the picture off the Kijiji link below, it look's good.....it could be a scam too.

Keep us inform...

That's the listing I'm looking at, although the picture is not the actual NSX he has for sale, just a generic example. He claims that he couldn't figure out how to post pictures of his.

I'm still waiting on more pictures and the VIN.

I'm leery of a scam too, but he does have a local Montreal phone number, and returned my call, so...

Start with the basics and get some pictures of the car with damage and missing parts, before taking a Trip to Montreal.

We don't have any NSXCC members in Montreal, so I cannot ask someone to take a quick look for you.

Bram

I'd walk away.
Are you looking for a project car that you're going to mod the hell out of, or do you want the perfect car and were thinking about rescuing an abused NSX?

Suspension damage could be really bad news on an NSX. The rest is just parts. Do you have a budget in mind? I'll bet you can do much better by the time you figure in repair costs.

There's a few techs on PRIME here that you could ask. If you want to pursue it a little further you should get in touch with them by PM. Joe, Larry, Rob - I'd ask these guys before I did anything.

Thanks again for the responses. Just thought I would update the post, as the seller has now added some pictures of the actual car:

As for budget and what I'm looking for, well that's all over the place. I'm either looking for something I can get for a great price, work on myself, and end up with a nice example for less than I could buy it already done, or just pick up one for say $30,000 or less.

As for this one, looks like it's a good candidate for the 02 front end conversion (which I know isn't cheap), as the lights are missing and the front bumper is pretty beat. Can't tell much from the photos other than that, except that the paint might not be great, and he is obviously running the car with the air filter missing!

As an aside, does anyone know anything about the 2000 Silver NSX listed on Kijiji out of Kelowna? $40000 seems like one hell of a deal.

http://kelowna.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...er-Color-in-Excellent-Shap-W0QQAdIdZ330820033

It's out of my budget, but I could always make an exception.

Thanks again.

I am less than an hour away from the Kelowna car and would be happy to try to arrange to do a visual inspection for anyone seriously looking at it.

OK, finally got the VIN from the seller.

You guys were right, don't walk away, RUN!

I did a Google search, and I found the following thread from 4 years ago:

http://nsxprime.com/forum/showthread.php?t=93680

It references an old EBay add, and judging by the comments and the one picture in the thread, the car was pretty much totalled!

It had a salvage title, but somehow made it's way into Canada.

Oh, and that thread says it's a 92, not a 93 as the seller claims.

I guess I'll just have to raise my budget, and keep looking.

Thanks for the advice.

Mike

Why oh why do these posts keep occuring... ANYTHING less than 20K is an obvious scam, and anything between 20-30K should be reviewed with great caution. It's that simple.

I realize that this wasn't going to be a nice example of an NSX at this price, but I wasn't expecting the Salvage title out of the US. (The car should not have been allowed admission into Canada in that case)

Anybody care to suggest a price now? I still figure that if I can get him down low enough on the price, it might still be worth it for a project car.

The asking price reflects a 'project car' as you put it. Mant project cars have sold for more.

Just thought I would post an update.
I decided to walk away from the car, but I had managed to talk him down to $10000 over the phone.
I never saw the car, but something just didn't feel right about it. Wrong model year in description, 6 speed instead of 5, salvage title in US, etc.
Anyway, thought I would post the info in case someone else can use it.

Still looking...

Tough call- I've been there too- having pursued an NSX that raised more than one red flag. You may have saved yourself a lot of headaches, disappointment, and money.

Good luck in your search!
