I purchased a new mast on my '92 and planned on replacing the old one ( which doesn't retract all the way). I removed the nut, plastic spacer and rubber grommet, turned on the radio, and waited for it to pop out. Well, it works as it did with the retaining nut still on. I pulled on it a bit, but it won't budge. I turned the radio on and off several times , but it won't come out. Any thougts/ideas?

Doc,
Is the mast an OEM part? When you turn the radio On/Off do you hear any motor activity at the antenna? If not, check to see if there is 12 volts at the connector that attaches to the antenna. One of the wires should have 12v at all times, even with the key removed from the ignition switch. This allows the antenna to retract when you turn the car off and remove the key. You may need to consult the manual for wire identification. I want to say it is the yellow wire that is hot, not sure, my car is in Idaho, I'm in Alabama.

You may have to remove the antenna from the car and disassembly it to see if a part from the old mast is stuck in the reel. These antennas are really simple, just take your time when you take it apart. I think that once you see how it is put together you will not have any problem. When you think that you want to test it just plug into the harness in the trunk and get someone else to turn the radio on and off. Be sure to point the antenna away from any thing that it will extend into. They move fast like a snake. Hang on to it.

Good Luck,
Brad

OLDMNSX--the antenna is OEM and it works perfectly ( except for not retracting all the way). The electrics are fine. I just can't get the mast out . I've since done a more thorough Prime search and it seems that force is the only solution here--unless someone has any other ideas (?)

Did you try pulling up on it as it was going up, while the motor was still running? Don't forget part of the guide will still be in the mechanism and may end up jamming the motor and ruining the whole assembly. So it will have to be removed. To do that you will have to remove the assembly after you get the mast out. Dali has a how to.

If the antenna extends and retracts, then the inner cable is still OK. You shouldnt need to disassemble it. Look at the new antenna mast. There is a sleeve that fits tightly in the antenna tube. This often gets corroded and seizes in the tube. Turn the antenna on, but hold it so it doesnt fully extend. You will just feel the internal clutch slipping. Then carefully yank the antenna mast up a few times to try and remove it from the antenna tube. If the sleeve is still stuck, you might try and spray it with penetrating oil. Worst case, you pull the antenna mast out, but the sleeve it still stuck in the tube. A small needle nose plier may be able to work the sleeve out, or last resort, remove the whole antenna motor, remove the antenna tube, and use a long rod from the opposite end to knock the sleeve out.

I'm planning to replace mine with a s2000 antenna.

I have read a lot of threads on antennas and the S2000 antenna addition has NOT been the stubby antenna of choice. The S2000 antenna has an amplifier box at the base of the antenna and does not fit well in the NSX. I think that the Shark II seems to be the "stubby" antenna of choice.

Let us all know if I am wrong.

Have anyone tried using the internal antenna from an 98 Plus Accord . This unit can be mounted like in the Accord on the rear window.

Just something I have been thinking about.

Just a thought. What I did I hate the antenna look, sticks way up and takes away from the car lines so I unpluged the factory antenna and bought antenna from the auto parts store and laid it down under the trunk carpet. I still pick up the strong channels and no ungodly antenna sticking up. Just a thought?.?!

I would recommend taking the antenna assembly out and manually clean out the tracks in your antenna motor.

From expereince, ususally there is a piece of white plastic retractor cord still stick in the motor.

It will not come out by itself.

The antenna is located behind the trunk fabric and is very easy to uninstall.

Once you have the motor out, take it appart and remember which parts go where. Once you have taken out all the broken bits, you can then slide in the new antenna from the top and place it so that the motor grabs the retractor cord.

Then plug the antenna back into the power plug and quicky turn on and immdiatly turn off your radio, this will allow the antenna motor to retract the antenna completely.

The antenna will not sit completely flush with the top of the antenna tube. dont worry, this is because once you install the motor in the nsx, the extra clearance is needed to reach the top of the extenal antenna mount.

If any of you have any questions, please give me a PM, Email or you can reach me at 661 251 7674

Happy motoring

Thanks for the advice, guys. I was able to yank the mast out awhile ago--i just needed to exert more muscle. I installed another mast and she's working fine now.

Cool........pull it all the way up and hang a bright orange triangle flag on it

BTW: It should lower your Insurance rates too.

Also another thing to look at is the spool at the bottom of the antenna, the bit the retractor cord goes into. It's a plastic dish looking thing.

On mine the antenna had let in so much grime over the years that this 'dish' was sticking... a quick grease and the antenna was going up and down fine.
