Another Subtle Reminder of San Diego's Weather

Much like akira3d's thread about great "winter" weather, it's always nice to remember how awesome the weather can be here in San Diego (and much of SoCal). Daytime temperatures today were hovering around the high 60's, and skys were a clear blue.

Being that they're kids, my son and his cousin's wanted to jump in the pool for awhile. While kids will be kids, and they'd be happy jumping into any pool regardless of the temperature, they still found it comfortable enough to stay in there for an hour or so.

(The kids at my house weren't the only ones. I noticed two other houses had kids playing in their pools also.)

Yeah, I know traffic sucks on our freeways here, but that happens everywhere. It's weather like this that reminds me why I dig this part of the country so much.

(By the way, if you can tell, halfway up the left side of the image, just beyond slope of the hill, is a briskly moving I-15. Sorry LA/OC folks, we don't have traffic jams here on the weekends. :D)

How do you deal with that?!! :D You guys can't even drive your NSX year round.

I've had people argue that not having snow anytime of the year sucks, that it's really great to have a change of seasons, to see the trees change colors, etc.

While I find snow and rain to be great "mood" setters, I'd rather go "visit" it and not experience long stretches of it. For us, experiencing snow could be driving an hour or so to the mountains. No shoveling here. :)

Just asking, but does experiencing those weather extremes (i.e. cold blizzards in the winter to hot, humid summers) end up wearing on you?

Randy that just plain mean...:D :D :D :D :D :D
We have been lucky here, no snow to speak of, little cold,
A lot of rain and eartquakes..... Wait that was my recent 3 weeks in Southern/Northern California.
:D :D

Len,
Did you feel the Paso Robles quake while you were out here? SD was far enough south.

As for experiencing rain while you were here, hmmm, when did you leave the state? We've had sunshine since the beginning of the year. ;)

We were in Monterey at the time.
Yes we felt it, but no biggie for us. Lived in Cali for a long time.
My youngest (4yr old) was scared for a little.
We had visited, San Simeon a day or two before. It messed up some of the roads in the mountain, but they fixed them quickly.
Also the rock slides were evidence of something shaking around.
We altered our trip and went up through the central valley.

We left on the 1st. Got home on the 2nd, 25hrs later.

It was 12*F when I woke up this morning. What to do? Gas up the 4WD and head for the mountains where there is still some snow left from last week. Cross country skiing anyone? It only got up into the lower 20s up in the mountains but there was no wind so it felt pretty warm in the sun as long as you kept moving. Actually it was a gorgeous winter day in my book.

My face is sun burnt as I spent the day at Arrowhead Staduim watching the Chiefs/Colts track meet. A balmy 55 degrees. Considering the out come of the game the weather was a real surprise. Thanks for the shot Akira, it was you that did the before???

Even though life can be expensive here, there is no place better for me and many others than San Diego. Traffic is getting to be really bad, save for driving around 10pm and up.

I second the hate comment too:D With a house like that, I don't care if it is in Iraq, I would be happy. Ok not Irag!:D Are you looking to legally adopt anyone are 30? ;)

you suck. :D With all that nice weather you would think flowers would grow year round in those flower boxes by the pool. :D

Is San Diego real estate prices as bad as in O.C.?
Well, it sure can't be worse than the bay area. They're loonies up there.

According to a recent study, San Diego has the least affordable housing prices in the state of California compare to what people earned here. Most people here can't touch the 400 something thousand dollar houses if they make like 10-18 bucks an hour. Housing prices up in the Bay might be a bit more expensive, (is it?) but the people up there can afford it more than compare to the people down here. Remember that San Diego is on the border with Mexico, therefore it has a large number of unskilled workers and immigrants.

Well who in the hell lives in all of those beautiful homes I saw down there?:)
It was quite ridiculous in the bay area as well. We were there in San Diego as well as Northern Cal looking at homes.
Northern Cal (Bay area) was sick.
San Diego had more to choose from at a lesser price.
We also looked in San clemente, Temecula (I know it's not in SD)

I have you give you more props on your house and neighborhood. Gorgeous. minus the homes, and it reminds of the view from the top of Squaw peak in AZ. Love the picture.

now waaaay off topic but....

is 400k the average/median price in San Diego? If it is, That seems reasonable compared to other areas (even without sunshine) Why am I living in MD again?

No, 400 something is what the housing prices starting out at in an ok regular neighborhood. Scripps Ranch houses carry a price tag of 550 and above, with the usual 700 something. Go into La Jolla, Del Mar, Sunset Cliffs, Rancho Santa Fe, downtown and most beach communities, and the usual starting price is a million dollar and above; very rarely if you get anything below 900 something. When i stated that it is the 'least affordable' is because San Diego County has a population of over three million people, and only a fraction of those buy. Everybody else is renting it out, but the population is big enough that supply has not met demand.

You guys have to be nuts to pay that for an average house. Look what 500k buys in my area:

indoors pool, 5 acres, wicked views

This is in the best possible neighborhood, This would be the equivalent of Cali's Beverley Hills for this area. My sister lives right next door to this house. 705k

This one is in the same neighborhood but closer to the lake 1.5M

Pricing seems very reasonable for what you get. Where is Cortland, NY compared to everything else that would get you so much for so little. (no that little for me though)

I actually live in Dryden, NY which is right between Cortland and Ithaca, NY, the home of Ivy league Cornell University. Other close cities include, Syracuse, Binghamton, and Elmira, NY. Most of the people that buy houses in the area of the last two listings I posted are transplants from California. They sell there multi-million dollar homes there and move here, build a new house and retire on the balance.

I've been wanting to upgrade to a single family home for quite awhile, but I can't afford to buy in any of the places I'd REALLY like to live. Nice 3 bedroom+ homes in Pacific Palisades or Manhattan Beach start at over a mil...and the homes I really want are even more than that (I need a 3 car garage). I'd consider buying in Palos Verdes, but I do NOT want a long commute (15-30 minutes max).

Looks like I'll be staying in my townhome for several more years.

BTW, here's a pic from the canyon run I did THIS weekend: :D
