And you thought you job sucked

what's so sad? at least they are recycling the ships instead of scuttling them..

if you meant the endemic poverty, bangladesh is hardly on it's own..

basic engineering 101

Cool link MiamieNeSex/Armando, thanks.

I saw a similar piece on National Geographic, however it showed a South Indian location; nonetheless nearly identical to the images linked above. What's amazing is the lack of scaffolding, safety-equipment, cranes/hoists, and so forth. A bit reminenscent of modern-day pyramid building, or destruction!

I recall Nat. Geo. saying that the electric-motor/generator onboard these vast ships is removed and used to power local factories or other similar applications!

When the cost of labor is miniscule, as well as any occupational safety/hazard statutes or guidelines, incredible/intangible feats of engineering can be accomplished.

I was only pointing out the job angle, nothing to do with politics.

Whats so sad? Watch the program and you'll see. These people are working in the most horrific conditions you couldn't even imagine. Workers literally taking ships apart with nothing more than oxy acetylene torches. The whole beach and surrounding area is oil sludge, orphaned children everywhere, people living in remnants of ship parts etc..Its was very sad and made me appreciate the USA and everything we take for granted

who says "WE" take it for granted?

i dont think its sad..its just how it is....and it could be worse...

If that's the case, you DO take what we have for granted. Your cyncism is disappointing. "i dont think its sad, its just how it is....and it could be worse..."? You've got to be kidding me. A member of an exotic car forum saying that "it could be worse" for these people. Unbelievable.

It can always get worse. Maybe instead of taking the ship apart with torches they would have to bang it apart with a rock, taking the ship apart for free at gunpoint, only to be shot dead when the task is complete. It can always get worse. It can get better too.

i did watch it. It shows poverty on a massive scale. There has always been, continues to be, and will always be the same situation. At least in bangladesh there's no civil war with people being hacked by machetes or whatever else is handy.
Am I supposed to weep every time i see a show on some 3rd or 4th world country? plenty of my taxes are used to help out less fortunate countries, as the USA is the single largest donor of funds in the world. And I do pay an ass load of taxes, so I feel I am doing something to help..
