WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A three-star Marine general who said it was "fun to shoot some people" should have chosen his words more carefully, the Marine Corps commandant said Thursday.

Lt. Gen. James Mattis, who commanded Marine expeditions in Afghanistan and Iraq, made the comments Tuesday during a panel discussion in San Diego, California.

"Actually it's quite fun to fight them, you know. It's a hell of a hoot," Mattis said, prompting laughter from some military members in the audience. "It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up there with you. I like brawling.

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis said. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

Mattis' press office has not yet responded to a request to answer questions about his comments.

However, the Marine commandant, Gen. Michael Hagee, defended Mattis, calling him "one of this country's bravest and most experienced military leaders."

"While I understand that some people may take issue with the comments made by him, I also know he intended to reflect the unfortunate and harsh realities of war," he said in a written statement. "Lt. Gen. Mattis often speaks with a great deal of candor."

Hagee said he had counseled Mattis regarding the remarks and that Mattis "agrees he should have chosen his words more carefully."

"Throughout our history, Marines have given their lives in the defense of this nation and human rights around the globe," Hagee's statement read. "When necessary, this commitment helps to provide us the fortitude to take the lives of those who oppress others or threaten this nation's security. This is not something we relish, yet we accept it as a reality in our profession of arms."

"Lt. Gen. Mattis is a superb leader and one of the Corps' most courageous and experienced warriors," Hagee wrote. "I remain confident that he will continue to serve this nation with dedication and distinction."

Added Marine Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, "The last three times that that general has been in combat, when he was leading Marines in Afghanistan and the two times that he led his division in Iraq, his actions and those of his troops clearly show that he understands the value of proper leadership and the value of human life."

Pace spoke Thursday during a Pentagon briefing. He declined to comment directly on Mattis' comments.

Early in his career, Mattis served as a rifle and weapons platoon commander as a lieutenant and later a captain. He also commanded assault battalions in Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He was the commander of the 1st Marine Division for the initial attack on Iraq.

San Diego television station KNSD, which calls itself NBC 7/39, captured Mattis' Tuesday comments on video and interviewed a retired military man afterward who said the general's remarks were "flippant."

"I was a little surprised," said retired Vice Adm. Edward H. Martin. "I don't think any of us who have ever fought in wars liked to kill anybody."

HAHAHA...what a complete moron....who would say those kind of words in front of the press....give it a few days, and he'll come apologizing...LOL....

like they say about safe sex.......use your head, and not the other head...

The media loves stuff like this. They like to take statements by one individual and associate it as much as possible with the entire community.

I for one, being a member of said community, do not endorse nor agree with the General's comments. Remember, though, that he was speaking at a public event and I think that he was looking for a laugh (which he got by the audience BTW). He wasn't being serious, but he also wasn't being very smart.

As for the comments about the Taliban smacking around their women, "if the shoe fits....." They spent a good deal of their time opressing others in their society before we went in and bitch-slapped them. It sure sounds to me like the Taliban are a bunch of insecure loons. The invasion was much deserved and overdue IMHO.

Im gonna side with Viper Driver on this one. His comments may needed to be worded better to be "politicaly correct", but the words are being spoken by someone who has seen and done things that you and I can not imagine. Someone who has laid his life on the line time and time again for our safety and freedom. I think I can forgive him for a comment or two.

If we lived by the rule that we should hate who has negative opinions and comments about us, hell we'de be at war with the whole world.

JMHO......

While the Generals comments I cannot completely agree with. I for one will always give those in uniform the benefit of the doubt. Those that serve us deserve at least that in comparison to gutless extermist they try to protect us from. So the media again gets its panties in a bunch........so what, go tell Ted Kennedy or whom ever else gives a flip.

Thank you

This is bullshit. He may deserve a lot of credit for all kinds of things, but people who are in a position to be shooting people should NOT BE HAVING FUN while doing it. If they have no value for human life, then they need to get the hell off the field. This isn't a fricking video game. I'm sure it's a "hell of a hoot" when you're equipped 100 times better than the enemy and you can pick them off with ease.

BTW, we have plenty of domestic violence right here in North America. It's unacceptable, but it doesn't mean we round these guys up and shoot them and then laugh about it.

"They" hated us long before any of this happened. So yes, I still wonder why.

And before posting this kind of thing and spreading it around, how's about first thanking our military for keeping this country safe.

I believe Jack Nicholson said it best in "A Few Good Men",

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have more responsibility here than you could possibly fathom.

You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. I know deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you not only want me on that wall, you need me on that wall.

We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would prefer you said thank you, and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post.

Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

No we didn't

Well...I guess we really know how that guy feels about shooting people. No gray area there.

during the shutdown of our formal vietnam efforts, i was in the AF and stationed in thailand as a customs agent, working for an "old guy" (he was 38, i was 21 ;) named TSGT Hewitt.

every now and then, when i'd say something that was better kept to myself, he'd give me a long, hard look and drawl in that 'nawlins accent of his, "now carroll, don't let your asshole overload your mouth"

not very eloquent, but given his public comments, the general could clearly have learned a thing or two from TSGT Hewitt.

So, the guy gets job satisfaction.

WTF!!!!

So you are saying that the Generals comment has made YOU hate US, as Americans??? Hmmm.....

I don’t exactly understand what you mean by your reply, but I think that you misunderstood.

The guy suggested that the general masses if Muslims in Muslim countries hated America even before the incident with Afghanistan and Iraq.

And I replied that, no the general masses of Muslims in Muslim counties did not hate America before the incident with Afghanistan and Iraq.

And I did not refer in anyway on how the masses currently feel about America. Or how the masses feel about comments such as the ones mentioned here

I hope I made my self clear.

Man, when 9/11 happened, there were middle easterners LIVING IN AMERICA that were celebrating what happened. And they're living here reaping the benefits of living in America! Many of those people grow up hating Americans.

And there is a very highly ranked military official saying “it was fun to shoot them”

But, the question is, do either of these two examples represent the righteous of the their nations?

And I’m really sick and tired of these political posts in NSX prime,

MODERATOR, WAKE UP!!!! Stop political posts.

And for the rest of you, stop telling me what I am and what I am not.

I am a Muslim

I am an Arab

I am a Saudi Arabian

No I’m not a terrorist

No I don’t hate Americans before or after 9/11

No, I didn't celebrate 9/11 and was very upset becuase it was against our religious teaching (and I can back that up with official statment if you want, but they'll be in Arabic)

No, I don’t hate people of other religions

And Yes I do speak for the majority, at least here in Saudi Arabia, despite what the media might have you believe

Now, the American government itself, that’s another issue, which is political, and frankly speaking, I don’t give a damn about politics, their dirty, always have been, always will be.

SO stop the stopped stereotyping already
