Yes, I'm somewhat anal with both my cars, even my beater audi that is parked outside and has close to 100,000 miles on it, and lots of stone chips from the PO, but at 10 feet looks like a new car.
I am getting better though, because being too anal is a sickness that causes must stress and lack of enjoyment, and I've paid for enjoyment, not stress. My NSX is sitting in the sun at work even as I write this because when i was transferring my gym bag to the Audi, i said to myself. "why take the ordinary car to work and let the fun car just sit in the garage.... what fun is that".
By using our cars, we are putting them in harms way. Streets are littered with stones, rocks, tar, bugs, etc. The elements are eating away at our perfect finishes. But, diamonds are forever, not cars, and i'm learning how to get more enjoyment out of mine.
That said, there are several ways to keep a car looking great and minimize the ravages of time.
I've had my car 2 years and 8K miles and it is chip/scratch free except for a small stone chip on the left mirror. Its the kind of chip that only I know of because I found it waxing. No one else could find it. Anyway, here are my tips:
1. Walk alot... park way out where other cars are least likely to park next to you.
2. If you have to park next to cars, try to park next to a 4 door with short doors. Try to park next to clean high line cars where the owner is likely to care about dinging his own car as much as yours.
2a. NEVER TAKE MORE THAN ONE SPACE. The arrogant statement made by doing that is just asking for trouble... and is downright rude.
3. Do not follow closely... hang back. This minimizes stone chip damage.
4. Keep the finish waxed and clean. I go over my car with a duster and a damp towel every day.
5. Put vinyl and leather conditioners on the appropriate surfaces often.
6. Fix damage as it occurs. Don't let it accumulate.
And enjoy the car.. use it up. Its what we paid for.
