Alternator Whine

Are you sure?

I thought I was having alternator problems last year, but it tested fine. Turned out to be the accessory pulley bearing. An easy fix. They sounded the same to me, the clue was that the whine went away and came back - I think a failing alternator gets worse and worse until it completely fails.

Or try this one from the parts for sale on Prime.

Any idea of part # for that bearing? I can't find it?

So to be clear, you are talking about the A/C belt tensioner pulley, correct?

Seems to be the problem that many people have if not the alternator, right?
Is it this part number? 38942-PR7-A00

Timing belt was done 2 years ago, accessory belts were changed also. The whining noise started after that. I think there was also a grumbling, slight grinding noise also (but not input-shaft or throwout bearing noise)
If I decide to change some bearings & pulley's, which other ones should I change at the same time?
Approximate amount of hours to change them?

Thanks Larry,

I had the whine. Replaced my A/C belt tensioner pulley and now the car is silent. 90k miles.

Agree with Honcho. I had the whine too. Pulled the alternator and replaced both bearings. While it was out I polished the case too. I think the bearings cost me ~$40 for both thru Acura. Not hard to do but you will need pullers in order to get the bearings out of the case.

Yes.

I always have my starters and alternators rebuilt around 100k miles for all my cars. Most shops will do this for about $50 each. They replace bearings, brushes and rectifiers. You basically get a brand new part.
