Unless you have a budget constraint & want to consider used, definitely get the S634 as Nimbus suggests. All the other Alpines that have been used in the NSX are pretty much the same despite model number changes. The exception would be the new 12 disc changer of course. Don't consider anything other than an Alpine with the stock head unit.
The added benefit of mp3 has no downside to offset it - you can still use as a classic changer for commercially avaialble cds, or those you burn yourself. But if you convert your cd's to mp3, you should be able fit 10-15 albums on a disc (depending on the rate you use) and that times 6 gives you a huge capacity in your magazine.

hmm

I took my 2000 into Audio Express, with the printout from the FAQ in hand regarding CD changers, but they told me i'd have to go to the dealer for some cable, cause the alpines they have wouldn't work...

is it possible to use an aftermarket changer without FM modulation on my nsx, or am i skrewed?

The dealer won't have the cables and the audio installer should have known this & where to get them - go somewhere else!
Here are some suggestions for where you can find them -

http://bizrate.lycos.com/,mss__cat_id--11840000,prod_id--7223076,rf--wgg,title--Alpine S634.html

http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_product_details.jsp?cid=641 - $232
http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_product_details.jsp?cid=2436 - $10
http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/PERACUALP - $17

No affiliation with any of these - just did a quick search on Google & selected a couple of lower prices.
You can easily install this yourself - http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/DIY/Alpine-S634.pdf

Last weekend I installed an Alpine chm-s630 changer...used the PIE adapter as mentioned in the FAQ's...took me about 90 minutes...I mounted horizontally on right side of trunk with manufacturers bracket...piece of cake!

I found the unit on E-Tronics at $168.00 plus shipping...and adapter at a local Car Toys...I believe that the unit is everything the 634 is without the MP3 capability...

I am so much happier with the sound of the system with the CD...

thanks for the info.

I noticed when i was trying to find the cable, that it terminates on the left side of the trunk, not the right. I wonder if the PO had a changer and removed it, along with a portion of the cable?? or does the 2000 have the cable terminate on the left? there is no slack, so it is not like he might have pulled the cable from the right side, across the trunk, to the left...there is still some sort of connector, so at least no wires were cut in the process..

From installing the Smartenna, the CD cable appears to come from the head unit to the left of the trunk, then has an extension that plugs in and goes from left to right.

My S634 including a very long cable that I had to stuff in the right side, so it would probably reach from left to right, and then you could put the PIE adapter in there.

Sounds like everything is there...blue cable on left is the one...it is short... and the changer comes with a very long cable...after you install the adapter, you'll still have about 3 feet left over...I just wound it up and placed it behind the right side panel and slit the bottom carpet to allow for the cable to peek through...worked just fine...
