Almosted wrecked, how do I tighten telescoping steering?

**Edit: DOH....Almost.....not almosted. :)

I took this long sweeping turn that I enjoy, when all the sudden halfway into the turn, the steering wheel flies forward. This scared the crap out of me!

Turns out the telescoping adjustment was loose, so I re-positioned the steering wheel out and locked the steering back into place. This has happened before, but never on a spirited turn like this.

How I can get into the steering column and tighten the part that holds/releases the telescoping steering wheel, so this never happens again?

Thanks,

I guess I'll be one of the first to venture into this.

I'll give it a shot this weekend....

Ditto to what Briank said. I've gotten into the habit of checking the tensioner each time I'm on a long straightaway. Let us know what you find, one of these days I need to adjust mine as well.

same thing happened to me the other day while driving on skyline...scared the crap out of me.

Thats a real common problem with our cars. I almost wrecked back at Suzuka in my buddies car on a hair pin turn. I dont think theirs an adjustment to tighten it. It is what it is:mad:

There is an adjustment sec. 17-14 in the service manual that includes a preload set using a spring scale.

really, i never knew that. thanks!
