All Wheel Steering in NSX?

The NSX doesn't have all wheel steering. The 3000GT TT had it, but not too many other sports cars that I know of..

Maybe they were confusing it with the Prelude.

My '93 TT 300 ZX had HICCA (sp) four wheel steering and it was great. In all honesty, I think I felt more confident in sharp turns with the Z than my NSX.

When I first got my NSX I found the steering extremely stiff (hard to turn the wheel) at speed. After 6K Miles and 2 years, I am much more comfortable with it, but not at the point I was with the Z. I was also disappointed with the 6 speed shifter. It was very notchy. Now, after a break-in period, it is like butter.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my car but when you own other cars it is impossible not to compare. :D

I recall watching a race on Speedchannel years ago in which one particular NSX had 4 wheel steering, as mentioned by the commentator. In fact, he attributed that NSX's wheel/tire/steering problems to Honda's 4WS system which was likely lifted from a 4WS Prelude (Perhaps experimental at the time, think pre-97 here). That race was the first time I had seen an NSX and b/c 4WS was mentioned on the car I too ASSumed that all NSX's had it. Only a few years ago did I research the stock powertrain/trans. Maybe this guy saw that same race

The comment in the race must have been incorrect. It would very near impossible to put rear sterring in the NSX.

Note:
Not all 300zx (90-96) have 4 wheel steering, only the Twin Turbo model. I have owned both.

The 300zx TT is a great car. It is more of a touring car, and is sure-footed. I enjoyed my Z's, but the handling was not anything close the the NSX at high speed (IMO.)

This is interesting... i've always wondered why the NSX didn't have 4WS when it was Honda's "flagship" car, but the Prelude did.

I've driven a 4WS Prelude... you can turn hard at almost 90' angles (mild exaggeration) ...its gives an incredible feeling on control. and parallel parking is a breeze.

Anyone know why Honda abandoned 4WS? What problems was it prone too? (eg. added complexity/cost, or reduced power to rear wheels)

According to the NSX-books I have 4-wheel steering was considered in the development of the NSX but not choosen because the engineers felt the extra weight wasn't worth the advantages.
A lot of option were considered in the development of the NSX, like 4-wheel steering and/or 4-wheel drive, electronic dash-instruments etc.
These were all not choosen because the possible advantages were not big enough to make up for the added weight.

If you look now, 13 years later, to the technologies that made it into normal production cars I would say the Honda engineers made the right choices. 4-wheel drive is still not common on normal cars, let-alone sportscars. 4-wheel steering is completely out of the picture. I do not know of any sportscar that has made any impact using 4-wheel steering.

I'm not so sure I would agree with either part of this statement.

I'm not an advocate of all-wheel-drive - it tends to add a lot of weight - but it has become more common in the past few years, including such sports cars as the Porsche 911, Lamborghini, Subaru WRX STI ABCDEFG, etc.
