I've been hearing about this director from friends and critics praising his work.
I've never seen any of his movies. I heard that George Lucas supposedly based his Star Wars loosely on one of his films.

So I'm gonna see one of his movies to see if I like it and go from there.

Which one should I start with?

I've seen Rashomon and Seven Samurai and thought they were fantastic.

you should check out

Kagemusa and Ran as well as Hidden Fortress, Dreams etc

Star Wars and Magnificent Seven are based on his works,
spielberg even said Hidden Fortress was his inspiration for star wars

good stuff

My all time favourite Kurosawa movie wasn't even a samurai flick, go rent "Ikiru" if you ever have the chance. Great movie, changed my life.

Saw Seven Samurai and wrote a paper about it for film class back in my college days. Good flick, specially if you consider when it was made.

Sanjiro is another classic. Tora Tora Tora: Battle for Midway another.
Way ahead of his time and a master storyteller.

Enjoy!

I've seen Ran, seen and own the DVDs of Seven Samurai (one of my all-time favorites) and Hidden Fortress, and own Rashomon in my pile of yet-to-be-watched DVDs. I think I wrote a paper about Seven Samurai back in my film school days too (it was the first Criterion Collection laser disc I had ever seen). Kurosawa is definitely one of the great directors. His storyboards are pretty cool too.

It's interesting how his samurai films were so obviously influenced by Westerns, then a Western returns the favor by taking inspiration from one of his samurai films.

Oh...and he has a cool name.

I also liked these two! They are a bit slow and outdated for todays audience but inetersting for a film buff.

I also saw Dersu Uzala and Tora Tora Tora and they were a bit too boring.

True, Sergio Leone had to give the Japanese rights for "A Fisful of Dollars" to Kurosawa to compensate the ripoff of Yohimbo! :)

I think Kurosawa's name is on Tora Tora Tora just because he was "initially" involved with the movie but I heard either on the E Channel or History Channel that he was actually replaced midway through the movie's production, that might account for it not being as good as it could have been. I might be wrong though.
