Hey guys. This weekend, I tackled another project.

I recently sent an extra throttle body(purchased from www.fosterauto.com for $250) to www.kingmotorsports.com to get it bored out.($150) King motorsports took about 3-4 days to bore it out then shipped back to me in 3-4 days ground. They told me that they have never done nsx throttlebody so considering that, it was great turn around time. I wasn't in a hurry anyways. The guy I spoke to from King Motorsports sounded very cool and told me how much of a pain it was to do my throttle body...he went on to say that the price will go up due to its difficulity level.(sorry guys :o) Anyhoo, I was amazed at how clean the returned throttle body was! Here are some pics.

Comparison

The old one measures 67mm inlet and 64mm outlet while the new one measures 70mm inlet and 66mm outlet. The new one is fitted with bigger throttle plate also...super tight sealing. I must say, KingMotorsports did an awesome job.

Anyway, moving on to the install. The install is fairly easy. There are 4 bolts that are holding the throttle then another 4 bolts that are holding the rubber gasket. I ported the rubber gasket and the inlet of the intake manifold to match the larger outlet of the throttlebody. Initially I was going to go all out with the porting and even started porting the hell out of the extra intake manifold I purchased. However!!! I decided to only port the inlet of the existing intake manifold lightly since I didn't feel like taking off the intake manifold(which requires taking off more bolts...disconnecting fuel lines etc). I'm a lazy bastard. It'll be my winter project to replace the intake manifold and clean injectors :)

One thing I found weird about the throttle body is that it runs coolant through at the bottom. However it is almost like a bypass. It comes in and then goes right out. Not sure what the purpose is. But now, I'm afraid that there are bubbles in my coolant system. :o

At the same time I installed the Cantrell AIS.

Impression:
After the I put everything back together, the car started right up!
 It even continued to idle correctly.... I was so afraid that it won't idle at all due to the new throttlebody.
Powerwise, I did not feel too much difference. Maybe a little at the top end. I was told throttlebody mod would account for maybe 4-5 hp. This is probably about right. After all, 1hp gain costs about $100 on nsx :o With the stock airbox and ais, the sound is much tamer than the cold air intake. I'm adding a chip soon, so I'll take it to dyno then. The end for now

Are you doing all this so you can beat me? :D :p j/k

Looks great Akio, you gotta let me check it out it in person.

okie....enlighten me. what is the purpose of it? don't get offended by this question....it is coming from someone that only gas and drive :D

Bored throttle body in theory should allow more air to flow. More air = more power! or so we hope...

AK, very nice! when you finally do get around to extrude honing the intake manifold and blue printing the injectors I bet you will see a bigger difference the what you have already attained. keep us posted, this is a project I have been planning on myself.

Best Regards David

Ak,
Maybe you should do a dyno now, before you add the chip. Otherwise, how will you know which gain or loss comes from which modification.
Other than that, great story and writeup. Not something I would have thought off.

I could...but then that'll cost more $$ hehe. We'll see...

ak,

Glad to see you received the AIS and got it installed. I hope you like it.

John

Yep...got it in no time. Thanks for prompt shipping :) I like it so far.

how much horseeeeey can be gain with an extra 2-3mm?

that extra 2mm will give you approximately 6% more air flow capability. In the end I doubt it'll gain more than 4-5hp. Maybe a little more with good tuning.

in that case, i shall do it toooo if you dont' mind. :D

I hope they can do a 97 and up TB. I looked into getting a larger after market TB for my 94 from Japan, thoes things were over 1500 bucks.

I'm not sure if they can do this on 97+ throttle body since it's drive by wire...

The throttle body from Japan is about 80mm wide and requires standalone ecu but I'm guessing the gain is a lot more drastic than what I did here.
