I was looking through the Comptech website and saw the billet oil gears and the high volume oil pumps...

are these necessary or a good idea? I recall that my local certified NSX tech recommended replacing it as a 'safety buffer'.

I was just trying to get more info on the benfits and other owner's thoughts on the products.

thanks,
Allen

The gear is a billet gear out of high strength chromoly (from memory). It reduces the chance of the stock gear shattering due to mis shifting. The high volume pump is a stock pump that has bored orifice pathways and a different piston for higher flow capacity.

The gear seems to be valuable insurance against engine damage since it's difficult to determine right away if your misshift damaged the gear (but the knocking from the engine due to oil starvation will be a good hint).

Offer these at a discount, feel free to inquire.

Cheers,

from what I understand and what others have posted regarding the oil pump upgrade is:
as cris indicated it can save your motor from a missed shift where the rev limiter does not work like a down shift.you can exceed your rev limit under that condition and one of the first things to go is the oil pumps gear.the upgrade pump has sronger gear.the second most likely thing to go I believe would be floating a valve but the new pump wont save you there.ken indicated in a previous thread that the only time he had heard of someone damaging the motor with stock pump was on a ramped turn on the track.I am saying that from memory only so take it with a grain of salt.with that said it is a costly upgrade.I was going to do it but have no plans to do it soon.only if I need to go into the motor for other work.if and when I do upgrade the pump I will upgrade my pan also

Several of the aftermarket chips extend the rev limiter. Having the CompTech gears is probably a good idea in this instance.

We have heard in the past from the woodwork that you can drive the NSX all day at readline but the pump gears can fail (and they have examples of it) when the car exceeds redline.

YMMV.
