How often do you guys change the oil in your aerodynes? I can't get a good figure from anyone....

do you have a source for buying oil as well?
I called cartech, and they said they just purchase it from aerodyne direct, but I can't seem to get anyone at aerodyne to answer the phone.

thanks,
Allen

Corky Bell should have some in stock. Although I'd twice been told to change the oil every ~20k miles, I also keep hearing that you don't change it, just top it off. This makes sense since the bearing is lubricated by a wick that comes up from the oil reservoir, so the oil isn't circulating and getting dirty. So, you can just get the car level, pull the top and side plugs, then add oil in the top until it drools out the side, then replace both. Keep the plugs in the correct location, the top one is vented.

see, the person who I purchased the car from said to change the oil every 5K, but cartech guys even told me that they couldn't get a straight answer from aerodyne...they've been told both every 3 months or every year.

I think every 5K miles may be too drastic, but if I hear it from someone else...then I'll do it. Too safe is better than too late!

ok, so you guys are telling me that with all the owners of TT systems out there...no one has any input as to how often they change their turbo oil???

come on, please help!

5K? That's nuts. No one who knows anything about Aerodynes told them that. For starters, they were not designed with a drain plug, only a fill and an overflow. To drain them requires pulling the turbo. This is a pretty good clue as to their intent, so I’ve come to believe those who say to just top it off at least for a few rounds of oil.

I topped off a pair on someone’s NSX just last week and it took less than 1/4 bottle on one (including what was lost in the hose) and virtually none on the other. They had several years on them and I think he said about 7k miles. My own had about 12k when I topped them off and they took less than 1/2 bottle each. So, my suggestion is to top them off periodically but don’t attempt to remove and drain for at least 20k, probably much longer.

Do you top off the turbos on the car or do you have to remove the turbos?

Thanks

The Aerodyne is a total loss oil system. In other words, there is a wick inside that brings a tiny amount of oil to the bearings. It sits in the bearing cavity and does not return to the turbo's oil reservoir. From there it goes through a tiny hole and into the airstream BEFORE the compressor.

since it uses a wick style oil feed system, is it safe to say that a turbo timer does absolutely no good? aside from being a show piece...
